Amid Thursday’s over-hyped brouhaha about Jeff Sessions meeting with the Russian ambassador, a curious detail emerged. In Sessions's recusal memo, it was explained who at the Justice Department would be handling any investigations into the Trump campaign's alleged ties to Russia. "Consistent with the succession order for the Department of Justice, Acting Deputy Attorney General and U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia Dana Boente shall act as and perform the functions of the Attorney General with respect to any matters from which I have recused myself to the extent they exist," reads Sessions's official statement on the matter.

quote:

Seven days before he left office, President Obama changed the order of succession without explanation to remove Boente from the list. Obama's order had listed U.S. attorneys in the District of Columbia, the Northern District of Illinois and the Central District of California.

It's getting deep.

Regarding the taps at Trump Tower:

quote:

What we have, however, suggests that someone at the FBI initially had concerns that banking laws were being violated, but when the Bureau looked into it, investigators found no crimes were being committed. Rather than drop the matter for lack of evidence of criminal offenses, the Justice Department and FBI pursued it as a national-security investigation.

Holy shite they are trying to cover their tracks.

quote:

That seems like awfully suspicious behavior. In fact the USA Today story noted this is pegged to the news that Trump quietly signed an executive order restoring Boente to the line of succession. The Obama administration chicanery was likely brought to White House's attention after Obama holdover and acting Attorney General Sally Yates tried to usurp the powers of the president and countermand his immigration executive order, actions for which she was summarily fired.

Why would the Obama administration make this eleventh-hour change to the line of succession at the Justice Department?

Someone needs to answer that one.

It looks like the Obama administration was hoping that the reins of power here would unknowingly default to someone unfriendly to Trump in the event Sessions was forced to recuse himself—or even resign, as so many Democrats breathlessly demanded Thursday

They can't have someone not friendly to the Obama campaign digging into those wire taps and spying on the Trump administration. They have no solid or realistic justification for it.

quote:

"In the Obama administration's last days, some White House officials scrambled to spread information about Russian efforts to undermine the presidential election — and about possible contacts between associates of President-elect Donald J. Trump and Russians — across the government."

This was clearly coordinated by the White House.

Just like someone needs to ask why Obama changed the rules on NSA wiretaps (so that 16 other agencies could have them) 17 days before he left office.

The cover-up effort is massive, but I seriously doubt the Republicans have the balls to do anything about it. Sessions has recused himself, so he can't do anything.

I remember wondering why Obama did that...

Obama thinks he is untouchable...

Up until this morning, I thought this was just nothing.

Looks like it was a fairly scrambled but coordinated effort to prevent the American public from having anyone that isn't friendly to the Obama administration evaluating the wire taps at Trump Tower.

Why would they want that?

Also the Trump administration noticed and removed the EO quietly, putting a more level headed official in line behind Sessions in the event that he recused himself. I suspect that they knew that the Obama camp would try to sack Sessions.

This is shocking. I knew Obama would meddle and sabotage, but DAMN. If he didn't know about the wire taps, then why the hell would he try to place an Obama-friendly AG in line of succession of any look into the Trump Tower wire taps?

Of course he knew. There's a reason the Obama admin wanted NSA director Mike Rogers fired back in November. Mike Rogers gave the heads up to Trumps team that this was going on shortly after the election when he traveled to Trump Tower without alerting any of the Obama admin.

Trump has known this for a while. He's just been waiting for the right time to drop it.

Look ... correct me if I am wrong ... but, wouldn't most objective people say that "The Weekly Standard" ... although partisan ... is a fairly reputable outfit?

This is some serious stuff that is afoot.

Where did Obama say he didn't know about the surveillance?

It's right leaning, but they are not inaccurate. Their article on poverty and drug use in the Appalachians was the first of its kind.

The article in the OP is "must read" material for anyone before they comment on the wire taps at Trump Tower.

Smoke and fire. This is what happens when you over play your hand. Now is the time to go on the offensive. I don't care what if takes but I want true investigative professionals tearing apart these agencies with hacksaws and lead pipes. We do not live in a banana republic! Engaging in nothing short of political espionage to subvert the will of the people and undermine the duly elected govt should be crushed by the full weight of the United States govt!

And not a small amount of it either.

The EO's are signed by Obama himself. This was coordinated by the Obama White House in the last few days of his tenure at least. It probably goes back even more to the point where they made the FISA request to tap Trump Tower.

Wow. I think a lot of Obama Justice Department officials and possibly Obama himself needs to answer for this.

I don't know how an impartial investigation is even possible in Washington....but this sure as frick needs to be investigated.

We can't have one administration spying on another, then actively trying to control DOJ investigation into said spying.

I'm actually impressed that the Trump White House noticed Obama's little scheme and quietly diffused it.

I do have to say how ironic and delicious this may turn out to be. They should have accepted defeat and moved on with it. Instead they have spent months playing this game and spreading this Russian interference garbage. Now we are beginning to witness the unearthing of a massive scandal, reaching all the way to the highest levels of the previous admin.
