Sen. Kennedy talked to the Kremlin during an official CODEL about what would their reaction be if the 25th amendment would used against Reagan.

Very much like why Rex was fired by Trump on the plane during a return trip from Russia after he met with Putin (Trump found out he broached the 25th amendment question w/Putin upon request by Crossfire Hurricane read-ins)

This is not new. And the R's letting them do it without even "condemning it publicly" is not new either.

They would still hate Russia now because current Russia is not a willing participant in their WEF/WHO/climate change bullshite.

They spent the 80s raising hell about Reagan's economic policies. His welfare queen speech made them lose their minds.

Russia (the USSR) was an authoritarian mess. Democrats were all in on Radio Free Europe and anything else that undermined the Soviet state. What they didn't agree with openly was Reagan's very aggressive policies toward Russia. The Democrats considered Reagan to be reckless, increasing the possibility of nuclear war.

Now we know that Reagan's aggressive approach to the USSR was the correct approach. The USSR spent so much on its own defense that its infrastructure crumbled, and the leadership could no longer sustain the empire.
Crazy how tables have turned isn’t it? Now have the authoritarian mess, and are spending ourselves into collapse.

In answer to the original question, consider that during the 1980's when Reagan was standing up to the USSR, eventual dem 1988 presidential nominee Mike Dukakis Governor of Massachusetts, and John Kerry, the Lt. Gov., eventual 2004 dem presidential nominee, tried to create some kind of resolution calling for the US to surrender in case of nuclear attack by the USSR.

I can't find it on the web, it probably got scrubbed during Kerry's 2004 campaign, but I can remember it.

No. They hated the Soviet Union as much as anyone but they were afraid of both.

Bet? It would be a suckers bet for Dems. Bernie Sanders honeymooned in Russia in 1988. His visit was used as propaganda and he didn’t care one iota.

Yeah, cool, an octogenarian talking about gay homosexual buttsex of the rectum. Can I get a recording so I can watch it repeatedly? That just sounds really fricking uplifting.

And imagine if Trump had had the balls to just ignore Covid. Trump was OK but Reagan was a legend.

yes, they are using our own strategy, in coordination with various countries - India, Iran, and especially China, against us.

They are going to have us spend ourselves into bankruptcy. They've always funded leftist causes here on our own soil but that was to try to win hearts and minds. Now they do it because they figured out our politicians will spend vast amounts of money on it to pander to stay in power in addition to places like Ukraine, Afghanistan, etc. sucking up vast amounts of treasure.

Add to that the items like countering hypersonic missiles, AI, and cyber warfare where they [may] have gotten ahead of us knowing our solution is to throw money at it in deficit spending.

In days past in a place like Ukraine our philosophy was "fight to win". If we were going to spend money on it we would do it in a way to to win as fast as possible and it would be decisive. Our politicians and Pentagon no longer pursue that. They try to win by just being in the game, and that is a losing proposition- ALWAYS. Just being in the game and not being all in is a loser. Either be in, or be out. Halfassing it is losing. And China/Russia have figured out that, because we don't stand on principle and are always trying to pander or play domestic politics with foreign policy we will never be fully in and they can bleed us dry.

For Chrissake. The Democrats never “loved Russia”. You’re grasping at straws, man.

Ted Kennedy infamously tried to negotiate with the USSR behind Reagan's back and should have been tried under the Logan Act.

He should have been in prison already for running that woman off a bridge and leaving her to drown.

Although I recall very few Dems who "loved" the USSR, I remember a consistent refrain from the Left that "USSR was a paper tiger and could be ignored."

Of course now that Russia is half the size of the USSR of 40 years ago, and has a tiny economy, they are a "Threat to Democracy" and must be stopped at all costs.

My contention is that they lack the resources to conduct warfare at anything beyond the regional level. So the argument that we must stop them in Ukraine, or they will invade all of Europe is absurd

I never will forget the devastated look on Jimmy Carter’s face when the communist Sandinistas lost a fair election in Nicaragua!

The Sandinistas lost the election in 1990, when Bush was president and Reagan was in protective care with Alzheimer's. Your time line is way off.

As for the election, the Sandinistas drafted a great constitution. Free and fair elections, checks and balances, and solid statement of individual rights. It was studied as the youngest functioning constitution in the world.

Then the Sandinistas lost the first election. The election was celebrated by independent observers as fair and free.

What Daniel Ortega has done since getting re-elected a few years later is criminal.

That time period was so far after Reagan. Got nothing to do with the topic of the thread.
