Certainly not a Republican but doesn't consider himself a progressive any longer and criticized the Democrats for purity tests (something the Republicans and the MAGA crowd if you want to consider them different are just as guilty of).

You may be on to something here. Gen X is the most reasonable group in the culture wars and are mostly just looking around going "WTF?"
The Democrat party is older people and then younger people that leapfrogged Gen X and maybe that's part of why they're so disconnected.
