Democrats are picking the wrong battle by going nuts over DeVos

Look, I'm not really a DeVos fan, but I also recognize how little authority she actually has over the education system. Ok, she is the Secretary now, but the Dept of Ed really doesn't do anything when it comes to education, especially after the Every Student Succeeds Act passed in 2015. She doesn't even have much say in pursuing a voucher system without Congressional approval.

I thought teachers would know that it is the local school districts that actually have the power over their jobs, not the Sec of Ed.

She's a perfect example for how donating to Republicans can make them ignore your lack of qualifications for a Cabinet-level position.

And we get to couch it in the language of educating children?

Slam dunk!

I love them wasting their firepower on a meaningless target.

The feds have no say in educating children. That is the thing.

They attach some strings to federal money, but even a lot of the standard setting has gone back to the states.

how much did she give? How much did the teachers union give? Why didn't the teachers union get to pick? They gave 2000 percent more than she did. You conspiracy loons crack me up.

They hate her so much they'll be happy to sign onto the bill getting rid of the secEd.

NCLB. Head Start. Federal money goes toward the public education of children. Whoever's in charge of that money has some say, no matter how small, in allocating it or planning for the future.

And Republicans showed the entire country that they're unconcerned with quality education, so long as you donate enough money to their campaigns.

NCLB is gone and was replaced by a system in Every Student Succeeds that saw a lot of that power go back to the states and the power of the Ed Sec curbed.

That really isn't true with Every Student Succeeds.

This isn't the same Education Department that existed under GWB and BO.

Head Start is run by Health and Human Services.

This is true - we now have an Education Secretary who's completely lacking in qualifications on running the Department and instead wants to tear it down.

Devos is one of my favorite cabinet picks. The teachers unions deserve a big middle finger about as much as anyone. That's a swamp worth draining.

A Department that isn't really needed.

Health and Human Services is perfectly able to do what the Ed Dept does.

They are trapped by an ideology that's all about symbolism, kinda funny to watch.

Not really.

But back to your original incorrect point - she's emblematic of everything that's wrong with the Republican party at present - slavish devotion to donors, inability to stand up to Trump, planned ignorance, valuing ideology over effectiveness, etc.

It was and is the perfect battle for Democrats to pick, and forced him to use a VP tie-breaker on a 'worthless' Cabinet position.

Trump doesn't get a limited number of VP tie-breakers, so I'm not sure what the big deal is about using a VP tie-breaker. This isn't the NFL with a limited number of coach challenges.

You can make the point that this is a reward for her and her family's donors...but she isn't going to destroy public education in this country because she simply doesn't have the power to destroy public education in this country. It is a perfect example of why the Dept of Education isn't needed.
