On Varney, I watched a candidate say he will win in 2020 because he will give every person in the USA a salary of $1000 per month and everybody will vote for it.
When asked how he will pay for it....VAT on everything @ 10%.

EDIT: Total GDP in 2016 was 18.57 trillion.
Assuming (haha) VAT on total GDP, we would have to enact a VAT of over 20% to pay for this. On everything. Everything.

$1000 is not enough to maintain middle class living.
I would give everyone $5000/month and no tax increase.

A VAT will substantially raise the price on everything we buy, which will possibly eliminate that $1,000 given by Uncle Sam every month, depending on how much people buy stuff.
It's like Schrodinger's Communism. It's both "real communism" and "not real communism" until you find out how many people are killed by it.

He'll lose because every loser and bum will vote for him and anyone who pays taxes as a working citizen will realize they don't need $1000/month of their own money to come from the government.

Exactly, a VAT add a tax ever step in the production process that adds value to a product. so every step that involves labor or manufacturing. So the Net cost increase will be substantially greater the 10%
