Is it commonplace to build statues when the person is still living? Wouldnt the timing also line up with when most of these men were no longer alive as well?

Just curious. You have DC as your location but live in Richmond. I can't bring myself to use RVA as we didn't use that as a kid. Nostalgia I guess. Although I did like the RVA sticker I saw so I'm torn.

I wonder if the time it took the South to recover economically from the war also played a role?

I just haven't updated it. I lived in NOVA for awhile, and D.C. for a short time.

Yeah, the RVA thing is somewhat new as I understand it. I like it, city pride, something everyone can get behind hopefully.

I might buy some of the statues that were erected in the 1950's and beyond being done so with another purpose but most of these statues (especially those in the early 1900's) were erected through fund raising efforts by those that lost members of their families in the Civil War...

In the late 1800's and early 1900's fundraising took a lot longer than it does today AND the work to have the statues made and erected took longer as well... The statue in Birmingham is a perfect example of this...

I think a lot of them were erected through community fundraising efforts amongst the citizenry. I'm pretty sure that's how they got Lee Circle in New Orleans.

Big reason we left (and absurd housing prices). My wife might've left me had we stayed much longer......

How much is a standard 3/2 going for in Arlington these days? It was around $300k back in 1990 IIRC

Also happens to coincide with: Dying off of civil war veterans and 50, 75, and 100 year anniversaries of civil war battles.

Arl is a hot ticket considering metro, quality schools, and proximity to D.C. You can safely expect to pay at least x2.5 what you would pay in 1990.

The date that these were erected are totally irrelevant. You know it. I know it. They know it.

The clear message is people built memorials mainly around 50 and 100 years after the war. The only logical conclusion is that anniversaries are racist.

How so? if you've ever taken a business stats class you know that's highly unlikely.

You could argue why (or the cause) but the likelihood of when they were put up being totally irrelevant is like betting on the Browns to win the next 3 superbowls.
