There is a TED talk on this. I didn't watch it, but it's David Puttnam, supporter of the he British Labour Party.

David Puttnam: What happens when the media's priority is profit?

Who would you get to advertise during your time slot? THAT'S where the bias would creep in - as it always does.

Damn good point. Could this be overcome? I was hoping I would get some ideas on how to create such a network or even just a news broadcast other thn my feeble idea.

In talking to people who have actually worked in the news industry, their advertising depts have more say over what gets published over anybody else.

$ > ideology every time.

You have no idea how commercial sponsorship works do you?

As long as corporations are paying the bills you will not get the truth on television. No matter how you equal out liberal and conservative angles.

The thing your describing really isn't news. We are so used to these opinoin panels discussing current events, we take it as a news source. It's nothing more than editorials. No one really wants to listen to actual news for 24 hours a day. It's not the networks that are destroying the news, it's the publics desire to see something entertaining. Hence the panel discussion shows. Until pure facts being spouted out by a news anchor gets ratings, we are stuck with what we have.

Stopped reading right here because your bias was showing. Surely you weren't looking for an unbiased answer.....

I don't think so. The lying is so ingrained that being called a journalist is almost an insult. I go to outside news sources such as BBC and Al-Jazeera for actual news now. It is shameful that we can't trust our own news shows. Noone I know trusts them at all, not even local news anymore. Given the chance they will lie too.

I guess I didn't explain my idea sufficiently. I imagined the panel reviewing the nightly news broadcast and proposed stories before they went to the anchor for broadcast. I do not envision the panel appearing on tv.

C-SPAN

I quit watching C-SPAN when they mandated a liberal Dem call a conservatice Rep. call and an independent call.

Nothing but a crock of shyt since.

No, lets not take the true pulse of the people watching, lets give them a false narrative.

FOX news does news not propaganda like all the liberal stations.

The problem with bias in journalism is that journalists aren't rewarded for strong, bias free reporting. They're rewarded according to the amount of web hits, views and retweets they get. This is bred by corporate ownership of media.
It's thus easy to see the step from focus on "facts" to sensationalist drivel.

The only real way to correct or ebb the ever rising tide of biased reporting would be to implement ethical standards to which news outlets were compelled to adhere. If this ever happens (I doubt it will) it is a long way off.

Fortunately for us, there are independent outlets, particularly via the internet, that are gaining prominence and credence.
For now, it is incumbent upon you to be a critical consumer of media.

Created? Easily.
Funded and broadcasted over an area wider than someone's basement? Not in 2014 America.

This!

Seriously, I stopped watching 24 hour cable news about 3 months ago and I can honestly say I'm more informed. I make it a point to watch the local news and the 30 minute CBS nightly news. My political views haven't changed, but I feel a whole lot smarter for not getting angry at the TV and watching something more worthwhile.

Now to the OP, take a look at the threads that get the most posts (200+) over the past 3 months. I think you'll find that well over 80% of those threads fall into 3 categories:
1) Gays.
2) Religeon.
3) Race (including immigration reform, voter ID, saint george, and conservatives whining about whatever bullshite Melissa Harris-Perry or Al Sharpton said on MSNBC 20 minutes ago).

I was shocked to take a walk down the previous threads debates surrounding Obamacare, econo-politics or AGW were not higher. There were plenty of these threads, but the threads with the most replies are in the above 3 categories.

It's distressing that as a nation we gravitate towards subjects that don't even matter to their day to day personal lives. I thought that as a board that trends libretarian / conservative there would be more important issues covered but nope, that's apparently what we're interested in as a nation. We are a nation of 7th grade girls.
