a tax based on mileage makes more sense than gas, altho taxing gas does bring other benefits.

But if we taxed based on abuse to the roads, truckers would get all bent out of shape.

If a private company does something like that, it's a bait and switch and libs accuse them of being predatory.

What mechanism would you use to do that? That sounds pretty intrusive.

I know. It's almost like things government does to encourage good behavior occasionally lead to unintended consequences.

Toll roads. Best kind of transportation tax there is, IMO, as long as the funds are actually earmarked for road upkeep.

Taxing gas does tax you based on mileage. More miles = more gas to purchase.

I read several years ago in Reader's Digest that an 80,000 lb. semi-rig does as much damage to one mile of highway as does 6,300 automobiles.

That's a lot of damage over time. As long as the truckers pay as much tax as those 6,300 cars, I'm good with that.

Because earmarking works. How's that SS lockbox working out?

So what do they do when folks stop buying "green" cars because of these silly taxes?

There was a question asked the other day about whether we were a well planned and executed socialist state now or if we'd just become super incompetent and let crony capitalism take over.... Things like this are why I went with the latter. Clearly this is a shot to keep green cars out of the market for a little longer.

Except for electric cars.

Or even cars with better gas mileage. So same number of miles, but less gas purchased = less tax to maintain the roads. Add in the construction inflation and you get a maintenance gap pretty quick.

No, this is simply some dumbass liberal money grab that hasn't been completely thought through that's going to backfire.

Government will then mandate that every citizen purchase a "green" car.

It's for the good of the planet, don't you care about the planet?? You should be happy to pay these "green" car taxes.

Electric cars becoming widespread is a major market place disruption, I'm positive there are lobbyist behind this
