City of New Orleans "Photo Safety Program" is total bullshite

I got a ticket in the mail recently from New Orleans through the "Photo Safety Program." I was on Canal, which has no speed limits posted anywhere that I've ever seen. It was at night and there were no other cars on the road. I noticed a flash while I was driving, not even near an intersection, but thought nothing of it. Turns out it was a speeding camera for Big Brother to give me a ticket for speeding at night when no other car is on the road and I am endangering exactly NOBODY. The pictures included with the ticket confirm it is a ghost town other than me.
I make a point of never going more than 8 or 9 miles over the speed limit because generally that means a live cop will let it go. This ticket shows me going 45 in a 35. Looking at the back of the ticket, it gives tickets for even going ONE mile over the speed limit. The price is $75 for going 1 mile over and $110 for going 10 miles over.
I have no way of confirming that I was actually going 45. How can the government get away with this bullshite? Why would the people of New Orleans agree to live under this police state bullshite?
My hatred of the government grows daily.

I agree with that. Do we have one in Baton Rouge? I really hope not.

A couple of years ago I got one in City Park for going 45 in a 35. Middle of the day, not another soul around. I paid it because I was in a work vehicle and I got an "or else" from my boss when the picture and ticket came in.

I thought they were ruled illegal because no one actually served you a ticket in person and that was essentially your summons to appear in court.

Red Light Cameras Slapped Down By Florida Court
Let's hope all these cameras get slapped down. Protect and Serve is now Collect and Serve.

Jefferson Parish had a challenge to them so they aren't using them.
Orleans Parish has said they don't give a frick, they will never take them down unless they are absolutely forced to.

They are total bullshite. They were voted out in Houston. I have gotten 2 in LA but I refuse to pay.

Unless you're a cop, I wouldn't recommend exceeding the speed limit.

I guess an alternative would be to raise taxes so local munis could pay the bills.

First of all, the speed limits need to be increased across the board outside of school zones. Second, I can't tell you how many times I have passed a cop going 8 or 9 miles over the speed limit and not been pulled over. I have never once been pulled over for going less than 10 miles over the speed limit. I once was daydreaming and, with no other cars on the road, ended up 18 miles over the speed limit. The state cop said they don't like pulling anyone over for less than 15. He then appreciated that there were no other cars on the road and had not been for some time and just gave me a ticket for an expired inspection sticker rather than a speeding ticket.
There is no way a live cop would have pulled me over that night in New Orleans since the streets were totally deserted. What really sucks is I was about 5 blocks from my destination when the picture was taken.

Given the amount of waste in government, the far better option is to lower expenses rather than try to raise income.

I see. After hearing your explanation, maybe you should just continue what you're doing to establish the proper threshold where the cops will stop you, and then go the extra mile to give you a ticket.

“Revenue-based law enforcement is the wrong way to go in this state,” said state Rep. Steven E. Pylant, R-Delhi, sponsor of House Bill 961.
“I am opposed to them writing tickets to fund a town,” said Pylant, a former sheriff. “It’s a disgrace to our state to do this.”

I was on Canal,
If it was the camera near Harrison Ave, I've been nailed there too. Doing 35 in a school zone. Problem is, school was out for the week because it was Christmas... there is no one you can appeal to immediately, and they make it so difficult to fight these things, that its not even worth the time/money/aggravation.
I wouldn't have paid the damn thing if I wasn't worried about getting my truck booted in Orleans Parish.

When not posted - divided roads = 35 mph.

Would you prefer to be pulled over by NOPD? I wouldn't.

Right. Speed limits don't apply at night, because people and cars don't exist at night, so you can't hurt anyone. I forgot that one from driver school!

That is the PRICE of going 1 mile over. The trap won't necessarily trigger at 1 mile over. You weren't going 1 mile over though, were you. You were going 10 miles over. So I don't understand your complaint.

Most people know their speed from looking at their speedometer. You clearly weren't, so a camera with a radar decided to inform you of your speed for you. Isn't that awesome?

With what? Passing laws against speeding that apply, even at night?

Enforcing speed limits is now a "police state"? I had no idea. Issuing tickets that are enforcible as non-moving violations and collectible through a collections agency - rather that a moving-violation that you go get a bench warrant for if you fail to respond - is more draconian, right? And having computers enforce basic traffic laws is less efficient than paying people to do it, right?
If you want to speed go somewhere else.

You probably want to avoid speeding in Harpersville, AL on US 280 then. They'll cite you for one mph over. Just pay the fine. Don't bother to go to court. Same situation in Lee County.

It just seems like there is so much that could go wrong when people's jobs/budgets are on the line unless they "Enforce the Law" on their fellow citizens.
