Very thoughtful post. I think most of the Southerners who supported secession thought they were continuing the legacy of the Founding Fathers. The Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions, authored by Jefferson and Madison, conceived of a compact theory among the states. Since states were the one's who ratified the Constitution and the sole reason for its implementation, the states could deem an act unconstitutional if the Federal government exceeded its expressly delegated powers.

Many Southerners referred to the Civil War as the Second War for Independence. They saw themselves in much the same manner as their ancestors who declared themselves independent from Great Britain.
