I've been trying to determine how white supremacist and white nationalist became synonomous or at least conflated. If it is as you suggest, then I tend to think the media was quick to label white nationalism as such, so that non-white supremacists couldn't separate themselves from white supremacists. However, I've been leaning towards, perhaps all, white supremacists are white nationalists but not all white nationalists are white supremacists.
To build on the above, consider what a nationalist is, then just throw an adjective to describe said nationalist. Then, perhaps, the next question to ask is what is a black nationalist? Would a black nationalist be a black supremacist--maybe so--or would they just be a black person who really loves their country and has visions for it?

I don't care about the words they use. Antifa calls themselves anti-fascists, despite being the most fascist movement in the country. Black Lives Matters claims to care about black lives but doesn't give a single shite about black people killing each other.

The behavior you describe is that of "Supremacists" Neo-Nazis, or the KKK.
White Nationalist is a ridicuolus term.
e.g., One possible use of the term "Nationalist" is as an alternate reference to "American Exceptionalism".
Another is to "America First".
Understanding Trump to be coincidentally white enables the term "White Nationalist" to be "innocently" applied and accepted. Then, suddenly leftist hate-mongers are off snickering they've tagged Trump with a racist term.
From there it's quite easy to maneuver toward accusations targeting Trump with forms of bigotry and allegiances he may never have known even existed. Now I'm not saying that is your intent. But it goes with the term.

I've never met a Leftist who could beat me in an argument. Granted I haven't gone into Leftist territory since the Trump shitstorm happened, but it's looking likely I'm going to move to either Denver or Connecticut soon to pursue a dream job, so should be fun.
