California Rep. (R) introduces legislation to legalize MJ by state

Town Hall
All you Sessions fans out there in favor of the AG enforcing the law should be in favor of this, rather choosing to or not to prosecute MJ infractions.

During the Obama administration, eight states, plus the District of Columbia, legalized marijuana for recreational purposes. Dozens more passed laws regarding marijuana use for medicinal purposes. Obama's DOJ generally agreed to a hands off policy regarding states that have voted to legalize recreational marijuana. With the new administration, there is considerable stress about whether or not these policies will still be in place. This is true both for medical marijuana patients as well as for people whose livelihoods are in the cannabis industry.
Enter Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA), a medical marijuana patient himself, who introduced the Respect State Marijuana Laws Act on Wednesday to the House of Representatives. The bill would protect people from being prosecuted under the Controlled Substances Act as long as they are following their particular state's laws regarding marijuana.
Rohrabacher has introduced the bill before, in 2015 and in 2013. In 2015, a bipartisan group of representatives joined Rohrabacher in co-sponsoring the bill.

Legalize it. But until then, weed is still illegal so it should be prosecuted.

Agreed, but thank God I live in Colorado.

Not really.

When he was running for president, Obama famously said he wouldn’t be using federal resources to “circumvent state laws on the issue” of medical marijuana. But not long after he got into office, his administration began a crackdown on growers and dispensers in states that had legalized it. By 2012, he had publically changed his tune from 2008, arguing that not to enforce federal anti-pot statutes in states where medical marijuana was legal would be to “nullify congressional law.”

Ridiculous.
Obama was much more right wing than y'all give him credit for.

Big government policies are not right wing.

This is the correct 'rule of law' path to doing this.
The Obama 'rule of men' method was very concerning.

See weed is still illegal in Colorado it's just no illegal at the state level nothing to stop the federal government from closing all dispensaries and grow ops and charging them with a federal offense

Legalize it. Finally get it done.

Both parties are very guilty of that.
Big Brother says hello.
Also, Trump supporting civil asset forfeiture doesn't look good for him either.
Big hint- I hate both parties.

lol yes they are, it just depends on which policy you're talking about. Flushing a trillion dollars down the drain over some oil in the middle east is not any less "big government" than helping poor people pay for medical care.

My biggest fear with Trump was on this issue. He personally probably doesn't have a strong opinion on MJ but I worry about the people around him who still think God made a mistake when He created weed.

Not that I'm hating on the move, but if he really wanted to help, he would file a bill to reschedule pot via the controlled substance act.

That is what needs to happen. Didn't Rand Paul file such a bill last year?

Why are y'all against it? It creates a whole new billion dollar industry? The federal government should be for it as well IMO. Creates Jobs and helps the economy.

Absolutely.

But it also takes power and resources from the states.

Who has said they are against legalizing weed? I think most on this board would be good with this proposed law to let the states decide for themselves if it should be legal in their state.
But that doesn't negate the fact it is currently illegal, and the law shouldn't be ignored. If you don't like a law, then it should be changed.
