That and a couple of incidents of a personal nature which I won't get into on this board cemented what I was already feeling about religion in general.

I can empathize with this completely. Have definitely been there in my own life. Wish we could share experiences but I understand and respect your privacy.

And I'm not religious you fricking idiot. I just have picked up a history book, instead of clinging to some Marxist-Zinn New Left ideology based in anti-Western bigotry.

Your hatred of religion runs so deep that you believe that religion has no positive impact on the world. This view is so unfounded I may not even argue it with you.

I would think that most atheists even though they hate religion they still realize that there are many good things they do for the world.

I find it interesting that ASU wants to do away with NPOs

an NPO means that their money doesn't go to profit or dividends but rather the goals of the company. There are very few if any Churches that would spend a large portion of their money on profits and dividends.

There are plenty of large Churches in the world who probably bring in millions of dollars a year. But their money doesn't go to prop up the salery of the pastor (some may but that may be grounds for them to lose their NPO status).

But let's say you have a Catholic Parish in Houston who has thousands of families registered at the parish. Thousands of people attending mass every weekend, each of them donating anything from loose change 100$ bills. That parish may bring in 30,000$ on average every weekend. But the salery of the priest is paid by the diocese, they are connected to a school so most of that money is paid for by tuition and some donations. The Church pays a low salary to, a house keeper for all of the buildings on the property, a DRE (director of religious education), a director of music, a director of liturgy, with a few other positions. None of the parishes paid staff make boatloads of money, mostly a lower to middle class salary, some may benefits others are contracted workers.

In this parish they pump a lot of money into one of their most important outreaches, a soup kitchen where they serve the poor daily. Thousands of dollars go into paying for food and clothing for the homeless. Also this parish has the operating expenses it must pay for (liturgical stuff, electrical bills etc.) Which on average costs more than what they pay their small staff.

I could continue to make up this scenario. But the simple fact is this Parish is not paying their staff a lot of money. The pastor doesn't make that much money, maybe 30,000$ a year, all of which isn't paid for by the parish. The majority of the money this parish makes comes from donations, not profit form things they sell.

You are telling me this parish should be taxed as a cooperation?

This parish should be taxed for 30,000$ a week in donations? Meaning less homeless people are taken care of? Along with other services?

When the majority of their staff doesn't make that much money, the Pastor is paid by his diocese.

To me that sounds selfish and you just want to destroy religion. There is no real good reason to want to make an organization that survives on donations alone and make them pay taxes on those donations. Especially when probably 70%+ of their donations go to a direct service to the community.

I don't see how you can make that reasonable in your mind.

I'm trying
