On the other hand, it is a great way to identify the mentally ill.

This country has fallen to an all time low. Can't imagine what it will be like in 50 years.

If gender is a decision thing,
how does one converse with a newborn to ask it what it decided?

My first thought as well. This law makes no sense by the very logic they used to pass it.
What's going to happen is parents are going to decide for the child what their gender identity is. If the family has a fricked up view of gender identity and imposes that on the child...
California's mental health industry should be giddy about this.

I think it's designed for people to make the decsion later in life but I don't know what would stop a couple of kooky parents from identifying their child as a third gender.
Almost certain that's a gender neutral critter gestating inside mommy.

I'm sure some parents out there will mark non-binary or whatever at birth but I imagine this 3rd option will come into play for people who down the line as adults want to amend the birth certificate. I think it's bonkers, but I imagine that's what they had in mind when they drafted this.

Wouldn't this create a high climate for malpractice in California for the delivering Dr?
If I were to be the delivering Dr in California, I would call the gender at birth based on scientific evidence and chart the gender in both mother & childs chart. This I think would cover the Dr's arse in case of malpractice being brought up by mental parents who think their girl should be a boy & vice versa.
fricking crazy Californians, can they all really be this fricking crazy?

exactly
why subject your kids to unnecessary future legal fees?
why even create the false premise in their mind that this is a decision that they need to even concern themselves with?
that stress is completely unnecessary

Had to identify gender at a new medical facility last week - choices = M - F - T
Almost circled the T - just to make them deal with the bullshite.
And how do I know that I am not really a Lesbian trapped in a Male body???

That and rare cases where children are born hermaphrodites or with abnormal chromosomes. I think doctors have been growing more reluctant to perform corrective surgeries on these newborns as sometimes they pick the wrong assignment. This would make it easier to defer to adulthood, although I bet the corrective surgery is more complicated by then.

Do you own a pair of Birkenstocks and how many flannel shirts do you have in your closet?
