A high-profile effort to establish a single-payer healthcare system in California sputtered on Friday when Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-Paramount) decided to shelve the proposal.

Rendon announced late Friday afternoon that the bill, SB 562 by state Sens. Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) and Toni Atkins (D-San Diego), would not advance to a policy hearing in his house, dampening the measure’s prospect for swift passage this year.

Gov. Jerry Brown, who had signaled wariness about the proposal's costs, said in a statement that Rendon "made the case that there’s clearly more work to do before anyone is in a position to vote on revamping California’s healthcare system."

"I recognize the tremendous excitement behind the measure, but basic and fundamental questions remain unanswered," Brown said.

It will never be heard from again.

This bill was so bad it was killed by democrats.

when even Jerry Brown is worried about the cost, you know you got problems.

The estimated costs for single payer in California was $400 billion annually. California's entire current budget is $180 billion. Even if they could get waivers to reallocate the $200 billion they get from the feds for healthcare, that would still leave them $200 billion short from funding the projected cost. Right now, California has the sixth highest state/local taxes in the nation.

I was REALLY hoping they passed it and went fricking broke ASAP. This thought of Single Payer needs to be crushed so it goes away forever.

What is about to happen in Illinois is going to scare some of these progressive states and cities straight.

Read an analysis yesterday that said it was a pipe dream to begin with because of Prop 48(I think that was the Prop) It would have had to have gone to a referendum, first to undo parts of the Prop 48, then another to approve the re-allocation of a massive amount of taxes. Taxes that currently go to state education.

why don't they just tax everyone with a 90210 zip at 70% bc they're all rich and can afford it and BAM! single paid system

I really wish they would have passed it just so we could have an example of what an abysmal failure it would have been.

That's a shame. I would have loved to see it fall on its face to be a lesson to everyone else. Now the left will still clamor for it and say that we need to try it before condemning it.

Career politicians look at the population and see their money.

Citizens look at the government checkbook and see theirs.

It's always been a power struggle. When the gov wins the people lose. They will take and redistribute every cent according to what will keep them in power if you let them. Their career is essential reliant on how good they are at fundraising, fundraising is their profession.
