Businesses and political positions

Whether they be Republican or Democrat views, when did it start making good business sense to alienate half of your customer base by going out of your way to state your companies political views? I know if I ran a business, I would want to appeal to as many potential customers as possible.

Professional sports are heavily influenced by sports media which has become wall to wall politics now.
IE, defensive back Felonious Buggs slaps his baby momma for selling his gold fronts for drugs. The next day's headlines:
"Buggs should be barred from the NFL for life!"
"The head coach should be fired!"
"Roger Goodell acts too late. He must go!"
And that's on the front page. You should see the sports section.
Thus, the media has more influence over business than the customers.
