Worcester, Mass

The developers behind the Roseland Apartment complex are eyeing Worcester's historic Notre Dame des Canadiens Church for demolition in order to make way for a four-story apartment building with 84 units and retail space.

According to documents submitted to Worcester's Planning Board, a public hearing on the proposal is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 2 at 5:30 p.m. in City Hall.

Yes, the Church is vacant, but I can't help but see this as a metaphor.

The Church is not buildings but the people of God who come together to worship.

If the building is vacant, it shouldn't be a big deal unless it's been marked as some sort of historical landmark.

The church was examined for possible use as a hotel, residential development or performing arts venue, the application says. Three hotel developers rejected Notre Dame for that purpose.

Time marches on.

All these people want it to remain but they want to fix it with feels and dreams. At some point you just have to say hello wrecking ball.

I like private property rights so I don't have a problem with this.

The school and church I grew up in has been re-purposed into a community center.

If it's not in use, gotta make the best of it.

fricking hell, this isn't about your fricking metaphysical idea of the definition of a church. OBVIOUSLY I'm not talking about demolishing the body of christian believers.

You fricking protestants are so much better than everyone else because you set up in school cafeterias. So much more reverent to the True Meaning of The Church.

I honestly can't tell if this is a rock concert or a sunday morning service.

Hopefully that salvage as much of it as possible.

I know you're not. I was saying that because the Church is people (and people are not being demolished) it shouldn't be a big deal to tear down an unused building that was used for corporate worship if said building wasn't already designated with a protected status of some kind.

You sound defensive.

I believe we should be reverent when worshiping God. I don't believe I'm "better" than you or anyone else because of it.

I think that kind of worship service is terrible. I believe in the regulative principle of worship (structure the worship service according to what God has commanded) and I think the rock concerts are an expression of self-worship, not God-worship.

Admittedly I am.

I'm of the opinion that buildings have meaning. They are built a certain way because the architects understood the meaning they had/have and work to convey that.

Churches like this one are more than just a place of worship. They are cultural cornerstones and represent more. Tearing one like this down, (admittedly it isn't the most beautiful, but it is still historical) hurts the heart. It is a symbol itself to do so.

They sold the property. Why would they have any right to tell the property owner what to do with the property. That isn't how it works.

I get your meaning but they should have sought out buyers that would have kept the church if that is what they really wanted.

I agree, I'm not saying someone should force the private property owner currently to do something else.

I'm really pointing to this whole situation as an indictment of our degeneracy as a nation in general. At this point the church is gone. Why?

There was no one with the power to do so who was willing to save it, or saw the value in saving it. That is the tragedy.

I thought the same thing.

It shocks me that little wood frame houses from the late 19th and early 20th century in my neighborhood can be protected from demolition due to historical value (mine included-and I have to jump through umpteen hoops to make any changes including historically accurate improvements-and I'm fine with it), but no one bothered to have this structure designated by the state or the federal government as historically significant or as a historical landmark.

Sad.

I'll bite. How has God commanded us to structure worship services? Prayer, then singing, then offering, then special solo then sermon? Or Prayer, meet and greet, singing, baptism, special solo, sermon, invitation, offering, benediction? Baptism, opening prayer, singing, meet and greet, solo while taking up offering, sermon, invitation?

My only issue. Even in its current condition, it is beautiful. Damn shame if it comes down. I equate it with the old train station in Birmingham.

Did the "Church" sell this church? If so, do what the new owners and zoning board want.
