I thought that people should protest IF minorities are being deliberately prevented from getting ID’s. Yes, there may be low levels of voter fraud in the US…but that does not mean electoral authorities should suddenly be less vigilant (just as a low crime rate in a certain locality does not mean the local police force is not needed anymore.). Maybe i am racist (I am a black African BTW)…but I see nothing wrong with presenting an ID for voting….or indeed for anything in life.”

Buddy of mine was amazed you could vote without ID. He lives in south England.

Told him I never voted without showing ID so I don't know what it's like.

Another popular comment: “Sorry I’m not American so unsure on the reasoning here but why is it hard for black Americans to have photo I’d and easy for whites to get it. I assume they fill in the correct forms and get one, so missing the point as to why it is racist against them. I don’t get why they don’t just get the id then.”

Them: “It requires voters to present valid identification in order to cast a ballot? Goodness gracious me! How draconian! Why do 796,000 adults (and 600,000 to 800,000 registered voters) in Texas not have have the government-issued ID required? Are they so inept that they are unaware of such a basic obligation?”

This is one issue where the liberal side has done great job of framing the argument. We present ID's for all sorts of things, but not to establish our identity for voting? kind of odd if you take a step back and look at it. In reality, though, I think that both sides are just trying to gain political advantage, which distracts us from the silliness of it all.

I agree with him, but I also would like to tell him to mind his own business. This is an American debate that we will solve on our own, and few of us are swayed by the opinion of a Brit, of all people.

But yeah, in this case the Brit makes some sense.

Those are the responses to an OP-ED in The Guardian by an American. The author was looking for sympathy and support overseas. All they got was confusion, sarcasm, and insults.

ID is fine. Other components of some of the voter laws are blatantly designed to make it more difficult to vote. I haven't read the Texas law, so I don't know whether that applies here. The NC law, for example, shuts down precincts so voters have to travel further, restricts voting on college campuses, etc.

Can't we make a combination Welfare/ID card. We know they won't lose that EBT card.

It's really simple....does the voter have a valid, unaltered form of photo ID?

Does said photo ID match the full name on the voter rolls?

If yes, that person votes, if no, they get a provisional ballot or gets sent home to find their ID.

saying its racist to require ID to vote is, in fact, racist in itself.

its basically saying "Oh...these poor black folk. they don't have the means to go get an ID. they're so helpless."

You do not need an ID to buy alcohol and tobacco. You have to be 21 and 18 respectively. Since I've gotten older I have been able to buy tobacco and alcohol without producing an ID.

Legally speaking, you do. There is no stipulation in the law for "if they look like they are old enough". It has to be verified via photo ID but most people (employees and law enforcement) look the other way on requiring an ID if it's painfully obvious someone is well over the minimum age.
