Their propaganda responded to conservative voices by explaining why they should never be listened to in the first place, thus making their bubble as impenetrable as possible.

They cannot self-correct because they have nothing but their own paid yes-men telling them what they shold do. The emperor has no clothes, has had no clothes for some time, has no idea he has no clothes, is dying of hypothermia, and is being told to continue wearing his fabulous wear (i.e., nothing).
