I'm pretty sure he can get the require documentation to purchase and own a fully automatic weapon.

Almost anyone can with a clean record and $$$$. The number of machine guns has been frozen since 1986. Last I checked 9-12 month wait and ~$15k...

but I'm guessing that the rifle was just a simple semi-automatic, not a select fire weapon capable of fully automatic fire.

Wait... Something doesn't add up. Linked story said teen shot one of the intruders with an "assault rifle" and that the intruders then fled, leaving a trail of blood. But just yesterday, I heard Gen. Mcchrystal say that assault weapons were for the battlefield, not civilian use, and that when they hit the human body, the effects are "devastating" because they're designed for that. So, first story must be wrong. Not enough carnage to be an assault weapon. Are we sure he didn't just use a revolver like that lady in Georgia? She shot her home invader five times and he ran away too.

But in all seriousness, the story of the home invader in Georgia is the best argument I've heard for "high capacity" clips. She was out of bullets and he was walking.

The trail of blood was probably from the broken glass. The trail of shite was from seeing a 15 y/o pointing an AR-15 at him.
