Ever hear of Marie Curie? Or did they skip that part at whatever school you went to? Geez.

Oh yeah, she invented radiation, didn't she?

(I'm kidding, there are lots of woman authors I enjoy. Although I really can't think of any that I would put on the tier of Shakespeare or Dostoyevsky. I can't even really think of a female Norman Mailer.)

Cynicism?

No? I read and enjoyed both of those author's books. Men and women are different in every capacity including writing. I like depth, nuance and detail, things male writers are often best at. Women are often great at things like creating fantastic characters and interesting story arcs.

I disagree with Zach that women are not good writers, they are just different than male writers. Id gander to say men often prefer works done by men and women prefer works by women.

First, as a business they should be promoting sales.

Second, they should use "whatever" history month, holiday, or event to increase foot traffic in general.

Third, they should use the event to push their slow moving inventory with attention grabbing displays. The good movers sell themselves.

Fourth, never attack your own inventory or customers! If a customer cannot find a book, has to work hard to find a book, or feels unwelcome while trying to find a book, they will NOT BUY a book!

So, Margaret Mitchell, Pearl Buck, Charlotte Bronte, Jane Austen, Eudora Welty, Daphne du Maurier, etc., etc. are oh, just average writers that could never match anything written by male writers?!?!

Correct. Buck is especially shitty.

So, why is their an 'author gap?' It's because females suck at writing.

Rand was a great thinker but bad writer. She writes as if there is no second draft to edit.

Can you name a famous female inventor? I can not

When my son was in HS I looked through his American history textbook. They listed women I've never heard of. When I read the details of these women they invented things that were so minor I realized it was to fulfill a quota:
"Gertrude McIntyre invented the ceramic pot handle so women wouldn't burn their hands."

My wife has over 1,000 copies in our home (yes, my house looks like a library). At least 90% of her books are by male authors.

Edit: Despite being highly educated and a voracious reader my wife cannot write. When she has to compose a
document she gives me her draft and I make 5 or 6 corrections per sentence.

This is a nit pick but I can't stand people blowing something simple as a deep moment.

We've silenced male authors, leaving works of women in view

It's not really silencing male authors. If I could find a male written book I wished to purchase, would you refuse to sell it to me?

If yes, then you've silenced male authors because their work isn't be disseminated.

If you still sell it, then you didn't silence them; you just made it harder to find their woks.

The pictures on the cover or the knowledge that the book is written by a man or woman isn't the message of the author.

Maybe the best selling woman author of all time. Stories and characters were always fantastic but she struggled terribly with continuity, details..and creating a made up wizard sport where the rules actually made sense.

The later ones depended heavily on ghost writers anyway.

My favorite female author of all time is Misanthropic Bitch. She was a journalism student in 1997 and wrote a blog in the early Internet days. It was must reading for me.

I found her archives. In it she excoriates female authors even though she is one. Here is a sampling of female writing titled:

I couldn't finish her books. She was a super interesting lady, but i hated her writing.

I am a woman, and think the marketing idea is beyond stupid!

I read vociferously, both male and female authors. There are plenty of very good books written by both women and men.

The "sexist" commentary in today's world is SAD.
