Bethune-Cookman alumni demand university drop Betsy DeVos as commencement speaker

God forbid this crowd of snowflakes should hear a POV that doesn't line up 100% with their rigid opinions.
Kudos to the univesity president for understanding the value of hearing from those with whom we disagree:

Protesters delivered petitions Tuesday signed by thousands of people demanding that Bethune-Cookman University leaders drop plans for Education Secretary Betsy DeVos to give the keynote address at the historically black college’s commencement Wednesday.
“I was in shock,” said graduating student Jasmine Johnson, describing her reaction when she learned who would address her and her classmates. She doesn’t think DeVos, a philanthropist and strong proponent of school choice, private and charter schools, understands public schools, or historically black colleges.
“For someone to come and speak at my commencement that cannot relate to me or know what I have been through is kind of like a slap in the face,” she said. And she worries her student loans will be even more difficult to pay back after some of DeVos’s actions.
Kudos to the univesity president for understanding the value of hearing from those with whom we disagree:

The university’s president, Edison Jackson, wrote in a letter to the campus community that a willingness to engage with varying viewpoints is a hallmark of higher education. “I am of the belief that it does not benefit our students to suppress voices that we disagree with, or to limit students to only those perspectives that are broadly sanctioned by a specific community,” he wrote. “If our students are robbed of the opportunity to experience and interact with views that may be different from their own, then they will be tremendously less equipped for the demands of democratic citizenship.”

This guy gets it. Major props to him.

some aren't interested in "democratic citizenship"...too smart for such folly and flighty ideas
these folks are akin to a ship on the water absent an anchor and have no idea why the vessel won't remain in place

Liberals demanding opposing views be censored? Shocking...

Agreed. Too bad the president of The University of California is not as intelligent as the president of Bethune Cookman. Also, Daytona Beach > Berkley.

This is great and sad.
fricking Bethune Cookman has higher educational standards in terms of ideas than ivy league schools

OK I'll say it.....it's bc she's white & was appointed by PRESIDENT TRUMP

God forbid a university drops a speaker that paid for her position in government and has no place being there. This isn't the same as someone coming to speak at a meeting to have an open dialogue. This is a commencement speech. One way. This isn't censorship, it's just common sense. What place does Betsey DeVos have there? Because she holds a position that she paid for? Yeah right.

The NAACP Florida State Conference called on DeVos to decline to give the speech. If she speaks and is given an honorary degree, it would be insulting to minorities, women and all communities of color, Adora Obi Nweze, the NAACP Florida State Conference president, said in a written statement.
Yeah, it's minorities who are trapped in failing public schools, not whites.
That's why in LA there is STRONG support for choice among African Americans.

Exactly! Conservatives pick the ONE time this happens and act like it is the norm. Any other Republican would be welcomed onto this or any other campus to speak. No Republican to my knowledge has ever been protested for giving a commencement speech.
Wait... sorry, a homeless guy took my seat at the library.

Excellent response. Furthermore, I HIGHLY doubt that she plans to use the commencement address as a bully pulpit to talk politics.
I mean, shite, I may not agree with a lot of the things Obama did, but I sure as hell would be OK to hear him give a generic "go forth and do great things" commencement address.
It's really sad that these people can't separate politics from other facets of life.
ETA: AggieDub14, thanks for hammering home my point.

I'd love someone to interview the protesters and ask them specifically what they disagree on with DeVos.

Maybe they can get Denzel now.

Censorship is wrong. I was against the censorship of Spencer at Texas A&M. I was against the censorship in Berkeley. This is not the same. This isn't a two way communication. This is a commencement speech. And it's being done by someone who has no place in government, but she paid her way to get there. Apples and oranges.

Even if we take your grievance at face value, what rule says that commencement speakers have to "have a place in government?"

You'd think these disadvantaged youth would be proud of an advocate of children being able to escape shitty schools? This leads me to believe there resentment is due to her race & political affiliation.

Thanks for quoting me out of context. A commencement speaker doesn't have to have a place in government. But this one does, and she has one that she paid for. Meaning she has no place being there or in her position.
Had you just quoted the rest of my sentence, the context would have held up. But you conveniently left that part off.

You need to work on your reading comprehension.
