Benghazi emails show State Dept had big hand in watering down account of attack

quote:

WASHINGTON – State Department officials repeatedly objected to -- and tried to water down -- references to Al Qaeda and prior security warnings in the administration's initial internal story-line on the Benghazi attack, according to dozens of emails and notes released by the White House late Wednesday.

The documents also showed the White House, along with several other departments, played a role in editing the so-called "talking points," despite claims from the White House that it was barely involved. And they showed then-CIA Director David Petraeus objected to the watered-down version that would ultimately be used as the basis for U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice's flawed comments on several TV shows the Sunday after the attack.

"Frankly, I'd just as soon not use this," Petraeus told his deputy in a Sept. 15 email.

The documents were released under pressure after whistle-blowers testified on the Hill and some email excerpts leaked to the media last week.

The 100-page file showed that State Department officials were even more heavily involved in editing the "talking points" than was previously known.
One email sent the Friday night after the attack from an unknown official said: "The State Department had major reservations with much or most of the document."

Individual emails leading up to that assessment show State officials repeatedly objecting to the intelligence community's early version of events

Didn't you hear? There are new letters being written to put everything into context. NO ONE asked them to do it. wink....wink

It seems they have had a deep secret spin meeting and calling out all their markers to help alleviate the pain.

How can one be unknown if he sent out an email. Gibbs and McGeek would know his name in no time.

From p. 94

"Morell noted that these talking points were not good and he had taken a heavy editing hand to them"

But...but...but...Rex said Robert Gates wouldn't have handled Benghazi any differently and that makes Obama okay...

re: Benghazi emails show State Dept had big hand in watering down account of attack
According to Gloria Berger on CNN, Benghazi was a CIA outpost with State cover. When the initial points went out and the CIA spoke of prior warnings, State objected because they would be blamed for security which was the cia's responsibility. But none of this could be me mentioned bc at the time this was classified. So the CIA took out the warnings.

As for references to AQ, they didn't know at the time the AQ affiliate was behind it. They suspected this but they thought better to leave that out pending the FBI investigation.

If you read the emails, you'll see this.

If you want to use a liberal definition of "cover up" then I suppose you can say this. But it's a tortured use of the word.

No where in these emails is even a hint that Rice or anyone else was covering up for election purposes which is what you have said.

You folks on the left are comedy. Thank you I am enjoying the Iraqi Bob act you all are giving us on this board...

I can't wait for the Ventriloquist to show up in here and say "I keel you". You are really dedicated to this thing and Obama has to love his sheep.

You see this right here gets thrown under the rug by these lib spinners. It is found that the WH was involved with more of the editing, and now we just wipe away the initial comment from Carney. No big deal. Forward Bitches

Security was the CIA's responsibility.........yet the CIA warned the state dept..........and request for security were sent to Hillary..........right?

Sounds like the state department didn't want to be blamed for security........that was their responsibility.

That's just how it's sounds.

I honestly don't know how all that works..........but that's the way I interpret what I've heard.

If the CIA was responsible for security, why wasn't the request for security sent to the CIA?

re: Benghazi emails show State Dept had big hand in watering down account of attack
It being a CIA operation has been out there a while. It has also been suggested that no assistance was ever sent because the terrorists were laying in wait for the rescue teams to arrive. I can't find the article but I believe it was posted in a thread yesterday. My issue has been that they are lying about what was going on. I could give a shite about talking points. I want to know why people were told to stand down when we had people fighting for their lives.

re: Benghazi emails show State Dept had big hand in watering down account of attack

But they DID know it was a Youtube video?

1. An AQ affiliate was flying the AQ flag over the US Embassy in Cairo at the time of the Benghazi attack condemning the youtube video so that's not a stretch that Islamic extremists were doing the same thing in Benghazi.

2. Their assessment was that it was inspired by the demonstrations at the same time.

3. The next talking point related this to AQ.

3. The next original talking point was that initial assessment was Ansar al-Sharia but that the group had denied this.

Now let me ask you to use your common sense for a moment... if it was the WH's intent to cover up the fact that AQ had anything to do with this for election purposes, wouldn't that be a really stupid attempt considering this picture of the AQ flag over the US embassy in Cairo was in every newspaper in the world? On the same day! At the same time!

You're actually saying Obama wanted to hide the fact that AQ was still strong when everyone was watching AQ destroy the Cairo embassy in real time on television?

Use your common sense.
