Baltimore city schools (highest per pupil spending in nation) shut down due to no heat

I really think it is time for audits of our school districts in America. Despite what many think, American schools are funded fine when compared to other OECD nations. I simply don't think lack of funds are the issue. Yet you go into some of these schools in rundown areas in our inner cities, and it really is embarrassing how dilapidated they look. I don't think schools in rough areas of berlin or london look as unequipped. (and, no, I am not implying blacks are the problem)
What is going on here? Why are our inner city schools so plagued by unmet basic needs and services?
outrage grows in baltimore as students attend school in frigid classrooms
This is a very bad look for America, even though it isn't directly connected to federal government.
Does this pic make you proud?
Maybe the infrastructure plan that congress may pass later this year can include money for massive renovations for schools in bad areas.
These places have pipes and material that is so old, they aren't even used anymore .

Parents and educators in Baltimore, where it is below freezing this week, say their students are enduring frigid classrooms and plumbing issues — conditions the local teachers union calls "inhumane." Four of Baltimore's public schools were closed Wednesday because of facilities problems but the rest remained open. Temperatures in some of those schools hovered around 40 degrees inside.

Theft of the highest order and the most despicable type of thievery is the type where people steal money from schools.

The US public school system is the biggest sham we have. We drop massive amounts of money into these systems and see little to no return on the investment. I refuse to vote yes for more school funding on a local, state or federal level until they show me they can spend their current funds efficiently.

They get all this money, and the schools usually spend it all on sports stadiums and stupid shite that doesn’t educate anyone.

Its time for Hamsterdam, baby. That's the only hope for what's left of Baltimore.

Imagine the bloat and unaccounted for spending at all levels of government that could be reinvested into a top to bottom overhaul of the education system. Education funding always seems to be short no matter where you look. It shouldn't be that way. I'm certain that the dollars could be found and appropriated. If we can agree on anything, it's that the United States should have a top notch public education system.
Of course it's not always about funding, as your Baltimore city Schools post alludes to. It's how thr dollars are spent. There's not much reform to be found if you get incompetent people who spend money in the wrong manner. Baltimore spends all that money and what have they got to show for it?

If you take a really good look at the Baltimore and Washington DC public school systems, you'd soon figure out that most of the money is used as a jobs program...

Bunny Colvin's speech to the education bureaucrats about corner kids and Prez's realization of the school juking the stats just like the police are the highlights of the institutional problems in inner-city American public schools.

NJ is a great example of how spending =/= better education

Theres the problem. And the problem I have with most of these mass spending projects from the federal to local level. Ultimately there's some level of local discretion on who gets what money and it turns into political pet projects, cronyism and massive waste.

Well, it is my understanding that the majority of school funding comes from property taxes. So, people that let their neighborhoods go to shite, pay less taxes, which, in turn, leads to less money for schools. If people want more money for their kids' schools, they should work to end all the crime & destruction that lowers property values.

Democrats want students to remain ignorant and uninformed, because if the students ever wise up Democrats are done. Why do you think they have always supported the teacher unions and fought against school choice and vouchers?
