BHP - I think it is a broader point that should be made. Because of black folks' "identifiability", they are often called to task for $hit they didn't do.
The other side of that is - black folks are reluctant to criticize other black folks - when they clearly should be criticized - because of the survival instincts that arose during Reconstruction, hardened during the struggle and persist to this day. There is a residual defensiveness that when black folks are dismissed from a job, denied admission or other opportunity, the knee jerk reaction is that it is racially motivated.
Both of those forces put, particularly African Americans solidly in the middle class, the community between a proverbial rock and a hard place. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Slavery, segregation, apartheid, holocaust,...this thread.

Slavery
Over since before my great-grandparents were born.
quote:
segregation
Terrible - and created a festering wound.
quote:
apartheid
In America? In cities that have been run by liberals, primarily African Americans for almost a full generation now. Whitey can't take 100% of the blame for this continuing - this continues because it is easier to herd people into voting booths if they're all in the same place.
quote:
holocaust
African Americans are, certainly collectively, doing better here than if their ancestors had been left in Africa - that is almost without dispute. Slavery and its aftermath were terrible, but "holocaust" - an "extermination" - give or take 4 million slaves in the South and border states in 1860.
How many African Americans in the U.S. today? 36 to 38 million?
"Holocaust"?

Not sure what this means...or, if it is in jest.
But, my dad taught me to WELCOME these discussions by pointing out "The Colorado River did not make the Grand Canyon by avoiding it. Michelangelo did not create the statue of David by not addressing it. Each took time and effort to chip away tiny little pieces of what is not wanted to reveal the beauty."
Now...
A) There is truth in some of these positions / statements. It is not COMPLETE truth. But, "we" need to own what is ours.
B) In order to help "them" understand better..it is necessary to "chip away tiny pieces of what is not wanted". To ignore it is pointless. To castigate those that discuss it (even if one believes he is totally wrong) is counterproductive. It is akin to ADDING eroded soil to the canyon or turning back the clock on the chisel.
I've never regretted discussing a difference of view / opinion with anyone who is not simply insane / evil. And. I ignore THOSE. I don't "protest" them.

I'm continually amazed at how many problems can be avoided or significantly mitigated with just open lines of communication. A democracy of voice, idea, opinion and argument. Heaven knows I'm not always right. When someone I trust and respect points that out, I appreciate that - rather than let me go around being wrong.
It's a new world, BHP - a new world - with lots of new challenges and paradigms - I just cannot see institutional racism being at the top of that list - not with a black president, black AG, black governors, black mayors - we've all got to be part of the solution, color be damned.

You can certainly interject segregation and slavery into your "argument", but apartheid and the holocaust are not US issues. I would say that the vast majority of the violent deaths of blacks around are at the hands of other black people. Sudan, Somalia, Rwanda, Chicago, etc.

I brought up apartheid and the holocaust/nazis because they are examples of white racism. Rwanda and Chicago are not examples of black racism. The Sudan is though.

Okay - I'm sort of tracking - Anti-semitism, as practiced by Nazi Germany was a form of white-on-white racism.
How is Rwanda not, then, an example of black-on-black racism (I agree with you on Chicago, BTW)?

That was ethnic, tribal violence...it's like the French hating the Germans.

How is that different from Nazis hating Jews?
(In other words, when do ethnic differences, if genocidal, suddenly become racism?)

1. blacks can't be racist
Oprah had a show themed 'black men who will not date black women.' Obviously these black men are racists. One was asked "Why don't you like black women?"
Him: "They're too damned loud."
Her: "Your mother was a black woman."
Him: "I don't want to date my mother."
quote:
2. women can't be sexist
OMG, women absolutely DESPISE other women.

3. gays can make fun of heterosexuals
True... they call us 'Breeders.'

Muslims can be as hateful as they want and get away with it.
Well, it's only OK with sharia law if they murder their own kids. They're not supposed to murder your kids. Unless you're a Jew.

Christians are always wrong
Hey, Rev Sharpton and Rev Jackson are Christians.

Basically all white, heterosexual, christian males should be loaded up into train cars (electric trains to protect mother earth of course)and taken to camps to work until they die (like stalin would want).
And who is gonna pay all the taxes for govt handouts? Hmmm?

quote:Not particularly. Like I said, it Pavlovian, meaning I get that same response almost every single time from liberals. It's very revealing, as if they all share the same brain. The others are just single words. I'll say something they think is blasphemous to their beliefs and I'll get "Wow. Wow. Wow" in repetition.
I see you've been reading some of Tigah in the ATL's posts. I'm honestly not sure why he bothers typing them out each time. He should just cut and paste some of his old posts. It's always the same trite, intellectually lazy arguments.
The trained response for global warming denial is the Bill Maher head tilt, raised eyebrow preceding "Really? Really? Really?" with the same kind of repetitive cadence.
It's pretty creepy, actually, much like college chicks almost invariably doing duck lips in selfies.

Easy, are you aware that slavery is alive and well in parts of Africa today? Genocide, also?
But by all means, thanks for exposing both your ignorance and bigotry for everyone to see.

Sorry I know that you wanted to discuss non-white racism, but non-white racism pales in comparison.

It's ugly and destructive, no matter the race of the racist.
If we live long enough - maybe we'll be able to get to the content of people's character - if we live long enough.
