Apple/Google Maps need to provide routes that don't take you into crime ridden areas.

Seriously. Driving back to NY with my wife, we wanted to stop along the way to visit a friend and the amount of times that the Maps app on my iPhone sent me into a neighborhood where my wife and I felt very unsafe and the likelihood of getting mugged or shot was high happened too many times.

That is a great idea. A very practical application.

What made you feel endangered? Too many folks with darker skin? Seriously. NYC is one of the safest cities in the country. If all else fails, carry some pepper spray little man.
