That's easy to say when you've never walked a casket or informed a family their loved one is dead and you can't intelligently answer the question of what they died for.
I pulled notification detail once for a year. Six months after the United States leaves whenever that is Afghanistan will be the same shite hole it was six months before we got there.

I can't imagine having to do this on a consistent basis. I'd want to respect the family's emotions and the fallen's memory but I'd be lying if I said a small part of me wouldn't want to tell them the truth.

This. I don't understand what people don't understand about this. There is no point in continuing to stay there if there isn't a realistic and fundamental change in the nature of the Afghan civilization. It is only propped up by America's perpetual military presence and money. What we are doing right now is 100% nation building and it doesn't matter what Trump says in that speech.
Our goal was to degrade and destroy Al Qaeda to the best of our ability. We did that. Then we hung around and tried to ensure that a stable democracy existed and proceeded to get into a civil war between factions fighting for power in Afghanistan. If the goal is no Islamic extremists in Afghanistan then the goal will never be achieved. Period. The government will never be a stable democratic society on the Western model. Period. We are shitting away trillions of dollars NATION BUILDING a shithole country for infinitesimal geopolitical value to our own interests. In fact, I'd argue we are at a net loss at this point.

Just think: If we can stick around in Afghanistan for another two years we'll be able to send 18 year olds over there to fight and die in a war that began before they were born.

frick this war, tired of seeing our soldiers die to fight for someone elses' freedom and money grab. If they actually want freedom and not a shitty caliphate to rule their life, then let them fight for it.
