What do you gain by merging these schools? Serious question. Doesn't the burden still remain?
The idea would be that the redundancies would be eliminated, decreasing some of the wasteful spending.

I agree will fully funding LSU the State Univerity and then having 2 or 3 regional Universites.
I believe we can kill 2 birds with one stone, by instead of closing the other schools, make each of those school specialize in a particular field. Make them into actually colleges and not full fledged Universities. This saves on admin cost, keeps local economic boost, and pushes school to be excellent in their focuses area. In the military we called it economy of force (getting the max of your on hand force)
Just for example (I have no clue what school does what better)
SLU= Education
Mcneese= Ag and Mech
NSU= Liberal Arts
Nichols= Nursing
Science- ULM
This keep school open but constict them from having degree programs with 3 graduates a year. If one college doesnt offer a certain elective then a student can take an online class from one of the other colleges that specialize in that field. So if a education major (which would be enrolled at SLU) wanted to take science courses then they would schedule the class through SLU but the class would be taught by an ULM professor.
Universities make money through, tax, tution, private donation and research. By making the college specialize they can focus efforts donations and research. FOr example, if Nicholls were the engineer college then an oil company that wanted to support Patroleum Engineering programs in rural Louisiana with $100,000 total. Currently that company may give $25k to Nicholls, 10K to Mcneese, could fully focus their donations to one one spot, and etc to get to 100K. Focusing that 100K would actually make a big impact if it was put in one place. Next, school make money from conducting research for private companies and by filing patents. Focusing these school with allow better grad programs, which means conducting more research. COnducting more research should lead to more patents which leads to more money. Research is the real comodity a school is selling, education should be a byproduct from the research.
More research dollars will lead to the hiring of better professors. Better Professors lead to better student which lead to a more capable workforce. Etc
Point is its not money, its how the money is used. Millions are wasted in redunated admin positions that do not bring value to the school. If the money is used properly then the schools should not have to be asking for more money from the state every year because they are making up the difference with private donations and research.

Yeah, I wouldn't close McNeese. It's a decent school in a booming area and in the 5th biggest city in the state. It also has a good engineering program so it supplies the city with an adequate workforce for the industry. Couple that with the fact that people in Lake Charles tend to stay there, I think it would be ill advised to close it.
I've always been of the opinion that the five biggest cities in the state should have one 4-year university that prioritizes funding to the needs of the area.

1. Tops needs to go.
When a person turns 18 yrs old they need to learn how to either take student loans out, or work their way through college. When a person actually pays their way it is more valuable and they take it seriously. You would also get rid of SJW, because no one would have time to protest working their way through college. I should not have to pay for a loser kid that failed to plan for his or her future. If they want to go to college out of state then so long. It is time young adults need to invest in their future.
2. We should have regional colleges and junior colleges that link to the college.
This way you get your basic classes out of the way.
SELU for SE Louisiana
LSU larger college
USL - It needs to go back to University Southwestern Louisiana
Northwestern Louisiana
LA Tech
Tulane
The rest need to be junior colleges that feed students to the larger colleges.
