Annual "close schools" thread: It's time

The legislature will never have the collective political will (i.e., balls) to close any colleges and universities. But can we finally admit that it's time?
I hate to say it (as a parent who has benefitted from TOPS), but if they were to get rid of TOPS altogether, some of the smaller, struggling campuses would eventually die on the vine and have to close. So why not save all that heartache, fully fund TOPS, and close and merge schools.
I realize these threads always devolve into nasty arguments, with people agreeing in principle, but always wanting somebody else's school closed instead of theirs (hence the political problem). I'm hopeful that we can agree, on this LSU site, that LSU is nobody's "pet school" and that it should be fully funded to Southern, if not national, averages.
Here are my suggestions -- and I acknowledge that there may be no real distinctions between "closing" and "merging" if you are shutting down a campus. Tough titty.
Keep and fully fund:
LSU
Tech
ULL
Merge:
ULM and Grambling into Tech
Southern into LSU
SLU with UNO (2 campii)
Northwestern with LSUS (2 campii)
Close:
Nicholls
McNeese
LSUA
SUNO
Eliminate 2/3 of community/junior colleges.

HBCUs are untouchable no matter how much of a drain they are.

You are on point - Louisiana needs:
Louisiana State University
Louisiana Tech University
University of Louisiana - Lafayette
I could understand an argument for UNO - as for the rest of them - sorry but the majority of the money needs to flow to LSU - about 60% then Tech and Lafayette split the other 40%.

One of those needs to be on your "closed" list, and it's not the one that starts with "L."

I'd add LSU-A to this, but LSU would never go for this unless they were able to get LTU or UL-L added to the LSU system.

btw....
I have advocated for years that each school should have to PROVE why it should stay open. What are your numbers... how many people from each entering class actually graduate....
Accepting dumbasses because other schools won't is NOT a business model.

It's still revenue even if they fail out; particularly out of state kids

quote:I don't think so. Without TOPS, students would have to decide on where to attend college based on what they can afford plus what scholarships they have been offered plus other considerations (proximity to home, etc.). A lot of students that are going to LSU now, because of free money, would have to rethink their decision based on how much tuition they can afford at LSU vs Nicholls vs ULM vs etc.
but if they were to get rid of TOPS altogether, some of the smaller, struggling campuses would eventually die on the vine and have to close.

Wait a minute. Isn't that the sister university of Miss College in Clinton? Those girls loved Zach when I visited.

It's amazing to me that Louisiana has about the same number of public four year universities as Illinois with about 1/3 the population.
It's one of the few things that the state government in Illinois does well.
Wisconsin has the best model for public university education in America in my humble opinion. More states should do what they do.

What amazes me is the number of Div. I football programs in Ohio. Hell, the Akron Zips??

I would keep McNeese and make it more of a trade school. Lake Charles is booming right now. Get a good petroleum engineering program there. Set up some ptech and welding programs too. Would be a boost to the local economy.

I figured the race card would be pulled on this... makes no sense but figured it would. There is absolutely nothing that the OP said that pertained to race in anyway whatsoever.

i mean just to back up OP, that's pretty much what happened when the LA government discussed closing SUNO down

What do you gain by merging these schools? Serious question. Doesn't the burden still remain?
