An American woman and her family, who had been held captive since 2012 by the Taliban-affiliated Haqqani network after being kidnapped while hiking in Afghanistan, were freed, the White House announced Thursday.

Caitlan Coleman, 32, was seven months pregnant when she and her Canadian husband Josh Boyle were abducted.

quote:

The two vanished after setting off in the summer of 2012 for a journey that took them to Russia, the central Asian countries of Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, and then to Afghanistan.

quote:

President Trump appeared to hint at the news of Coleman's release during a speech in Coleman's home state of Pennsylvania.
"Something happened today, where a country that totally disrespected us called with some very, very important news," Trump said. "And one of my generals came in. They said, 'You know, I have to tell you, a year ago they would've never done that.' It was a great sign of respect. You'll probably be hearing about it over the next few days. But this is a country that did not respect us. This is a country that respects us now. The world is starting to respect us again, believe me."

I mean come on, who thinks that is a good idea, especially when you're pregnant. surprised they didn't add North Korea to the travel list.

The same people that think it's a good idea to have two more children while being held hostage by the Taliban.

Its worth noting that its only white folks that travel halfway around the world to go hiking through a desolate wasteland full of warring factions.

While pregnant.

This should be factored into those bell curve studies.

Had a buddy that just got back from smelling coffee beans in Honduras and Guatemala for his new coffee shop.

His blue eyed blonde haired daughter (5) was nearly mobbed in the streets of Honduras because the people rarely see that there. He said maybe 50-70 people crowding around wanting to take pictures of her.

Said it scared the shite out of him. I told him we can't travel the world with kids the way we used to back then. But Afghanistan? With a family? Plus you're white?

frick that!

I'm glad they are safe and the kids are safe, but what in the hell are those parents thinking? People are stupid. Don't go to Afghanistan. Don't go to Iraq. Don't go to North Korea. Don't go to a shite ton of places in Africa. Don't go to places in South America unless you know what the hell you are doing. Certainly do not bring your children to these places. Good feelings and intentions will not protect you from evil people.

It looks like fortunately, they got released before the daughter was married off or the little boy got involved in the AfghanMBLA.

To be fair there's not a lot else to do recreationally while being held by the Taliban and there are no CVS's or truck stop bathroom coin machines nearby.

I lied.

And people are calling out the college kid in North Korea who went there as part of a school sanctioned trip

I have no sympathy for people that do this crap. It's like my white arse running on foot through a shady hood at night and being surprised if something happened to me. I have no one to blame but myself for getting in that situation.

There was the twenty something aged kids that went hiking in the mountains on the border of Iran and they got arrested...Why the hell would you go to Iraq and Iran to hike mountains? There are mountains in many other safer places!

Or the young college graduate girl from Colorado that went hiking through Tibet BY HERSELF! Needless to say after she went missing in i think 2010, her parents have never found her.

Some people just don't that "self preservation" gene and stuff happens.
