Pence and Trump on the steps watching Obama and Michelle get in the helicopter made me realize how vulnerable they were out in the open like that. How do they ensure their safety? Was there a "TSA like" setup to get into The inauguration DC area? I keep thinking about snipers up on those buildings.

Every building within hundreds of yards of that location would have been cleared. Every single one.

they did have check points to get in to the events. Of course they are run by people that are much better at safety than your average TSA agent

Guranteed snipers are set up on rooftops spanning over 500 yards at the minimum.

Streets and buildings along the mall, around the Capitol and along Penn Ave were closed, cleared and secured beginning yesterday afternoon.

Most, if not all, Federal offices in the downtown DC area sent workers home around noon yesterday and had them tekework yesterday afternoon and today.

I'm sure there are. However they more than likely can't tell you.

I am guessing the guvament has technologies they don't admit having to detect any threat out to any reasonable distance.

It has been practice for a long time to have eyes on any location that could provide long range rifle shots too.

They've literally been planning (and refining the plan), preparing and rehearsing for this for months. The Capitol Area security apparatus is fantastic with crowd control - they don't have the specific expertise of linear crowd control that New Orleans has or the frequent experience with huge crowds that New York and, to a lesser degree, Los Angeles has - but for this type of public, large crowd, ceremonial event? They're world class - the gold standard.
