I'm in a massive IT Aggravation at the moment. Is there any way to obtain software that isn't "Cloud Based."

I refuse to use Microsoft 360, Google anything involving my email or callendaring, and I almost all the way refuse to use dropbox (and I sure as shite don't want to pay for this obnoxious trend of subscribing to every kind of software imaginable).

I want physical custody of whatever computer houses my businesses data, my clients' data, and my own personal data.

Does anyone else refuse to participate in this shite? Or is it just me?

How do I avoid the Cloud? Yes. It's for political reasons. The Leftists have outsourced their tyranny. I want to know how to keep my shite mine.

If you want to keep your shite yours, use pen and paper. If you're using electronic data, you're safer in the cloud than you are on your own personal network. Unless, of course, you're spending a shite ton of money on major cybersecurity.

Set up servers in house. Preferably over a toilet like Hillary.

I know what you mean. I like to have possession of all my stuff on my own hardware. I get made fun of for keeping my music on my phone and on usb drives in the car but every time someone loses signal I never let it go to waste.

In my job I have to use cloud. No option. If I was solo or small business I would feel the same as you though.

I’m a small business owner, and I refuse to have a website.

Not that anyone gives a shite about what lil Ole Wednesday- but I think the day is coming where the Zuckerbergs of the world care about groups of lil Ole Wednesday. Ex- happens when Microsoft decides as a private business it doesn’t want to do business with me, and it locks me out of my secure “cloud”

Or banks? Or whoever. Or whatever

At the very least I need my damn information. I’m less worried about getting hacked (I do have IT maintenance, etc.) than I am with some nebulous tech company controlling my info.

How much money are you prepared to spend? You have to have someone with security knowledge. You have to have backup servers for when something goes wrong with the live server. You have to have a redundant power supply to avoid downtime.

It all depends on how big you guys are. If it's a SOHO then you may be able to get away with having a dedicated server at the office and a backup for that server and a VPN to get you into that server.

If you are not using Office 365 or Google, what do you plan on using for email?

The firm I work at has everything in the cloud, but everything is also copied in our in-office network so we can technically use one or the other. Something like that would resolve your concern about losing access to your information I would think.

Small businesses are way more likely to skip cloud providers than big business.

I guess this is called a server (not being a smart arse but I'm a techtard), but my friend works for a company that does "local" clouds ... so you can use "cloud-based" applications but all your information is stored on a local cloud. So in theory you get all the benefits but you own your cloud vs. Amazon.

I don't get your reasoning at all, however, we avoided putting anything in the cloud for years because we didn't want our confidential information on anyone else's storage system, and we did not want a failure in someone else's system to leave us with nothing. We spent way too much money to have everything stored and backed up on site.

Until Q4 of 2020.

We had to upgrade and, for reasons I still don't fully understand, we had to go to cloud based systems for some of our programs and systems.

I don't like it because I want to control my own programs and data. Period.

As for leftists and tyranny, well, that's cra cra.

You can use a private cloud and still have full control. You just have to provide your own infrastructure, hypervisors, etc.

Absent that, learn all you can about containerizations, federation and kubernetes.

Further, based on what type of cloud model you use, the vendor has varying levels of security requirements. More often than not, it is clearly spelled out in the SLA.

Spend money on physical/systems infrastructure so you can host the services yourself.

Because if Microsoft decides they don't want to do business with you, Cox will also decide they don't want to do business with you. And AT&T/Verizon, and every other provider of communication out there. In the meantime, take advantage of the security and efficiency in the cloud.

This misnomer that "nobody gives a shite about me and my data" is a dangerous mindset. Firstly, they know that you give a shite about your data and will likely pay handsomely to get your data back after they steal it. And as an attorney, they know you don't want your data exposed to the public and will pay handsomely to keep it private.

Secondly, they know that you have a bunch of other people that trust you. And if those other people get an email from you, they are going to trust that email. So, breaking into your email presents a treasure trove of new, juicy targets.

When big tech and the government turn on you, having your own servers is not going to help. Until that time, having your data in the cloud provides SUBSTANTIALLY more data security than your own servers.

Hey my favorite Wednesday girl... you might want to look at the following options.

Each can be loaded on free Linux (and in some cases Windows OS) and can be administered by web browser.

Your data stays with you. If you need remote access to your data, you can easily setup a dynamic DNS service which helps the internet keep track of the IP address your Cable or internet provider supplies.

You can (or at least you could) still buy MS Office 2019 and install it on your computer. You won't get all of the performance and feature updates, but it will work and isn't cloud based. You just have to make sure you have enough hard drive space.

Use Outlook that comes Office 2019 for email and have your ISP mail set up as a POP account as opposed to IMAP. That way when you open Outlook, it downloads the mail from the ISP mail server to your local machine and removes it from the server. Outlook also gives you a built in calendar.

Buy multiple external hard drives and back up daily, switch them out and keep them off site so you always have a current backup offsite in case you lose your IT assets due to fire/flood/theft.

Accounting software would be a bit harder. Quicken/Quickbooks is all subscription-based now I believe. There may be some other options that I don't know about that are still purchase/install the old fashioned way.
