Because it replaced less savory terms like "negro," "colored," etc., at a time when folks wanted to be able to trace their roots to somewhere specific (difficult to so with the slave trade of course).

I've been to several. Ask an Egyptian what race they are. They won't even know what you're talking about.

Ask a Kuwaiti what race they are. They won't even know what you're talking about.
Then ask them the proper place for a person in their country who is not a Kuwaiti.
The exact same applies in Egypt. And most middle eastern countries.
I'm not even going to ouch a good portion of the asian countries.

None of those enslaved a race for 400 years. You have to go back to Moses for that.
I guess that it's hard to classify one pain as worse than another, but none of those countries aside from South Africa systematically and legally enforced racial discrimination for decades.
