same ole same ole he came close to making a decision before i got some more information. basically texas led him to beleive that they were the only school that would honor all four years of his scholly if he got hurt before NSD which is of course not true. when he found out that everyone would do it it was back to square one

It’s been a while since we’ve talked to Jamarkus McFarland so we checked in with the five-star defensive tackle to get an update.

McFarland and Lufkin had their game cancelled last week due to Hurricane Ike, but Lufkin is 2-0 on the year. The big fella said he feels like he’s played fairly well in spite of constant double and triple teams. In the opener he estimated that he recorded six tackles and two sacks and he followed that up with a five-tackle performance in the second contest.

“As long as we get the W I don’t really care about the stats. My thing is to be out there. If I take the pressure off of someone else, their stats will go up,” McFarland said. “It can get frustrating but I don’t want to be selfish towards our team. It's no problem taking one for the squad if that’s what it takes. As long as we're making the plays, I’m happy. The blocking schemes towards me can be frustrating because I'm the only one they do that to but I take pride in that.”

McFarland said he’s been seeing a lot of high-low blocks, a lot of teams pulling their linemen to get away from him and a lot of chop blocks. Because of the extra attention he’s seeing, the thought of injury has crossed his mind. And that thought process nearly led to some staggering recruiting news.

McFarland said he and his mother sat down a couple weeks ago to discuss his options, and they also came to the decision to give an early commitment.

“It's still pretty wide open. I thought about making an early commitment. I thought about it hard,” McFarland said. “I almost came to the decision to make an early commitment so if I got hurt I wouldn't be hung out to dry.

“It was a couple weeks ago. My mother and I sat down and talked about it. We thought maybe I should do it so I can be covered. That’s my biggest thing. I’ve got to be able to pay my bills when I get older.”

The obvious question … which way was he leaning?

“I didn't really know. I was close to Texas because they have the whole four. They’re the only ones that talked about if you get hurt, we guarantee you four years. My mom talked to the other coaches and that’s what kind of shook it up because I hadn’t heard. They said we’ll scholar you for four years if you get hurt, guaranteed. I hadn’t heard that. My mom stressed that and they all said four years, so that kind of shook it up and I decided not to do it now,” McFarland said.

The 6-foot-3, 280-pound McFarland was planning to attend the Horns’ game against Arkansas before it was rescheduled. He will not be able to make it next week when the game is played because Lufkin plays on that Saturday. This weekend, he’s going to travel with some of his teammates to watch Texas A&M host Miami.

In our last conversation with McFarland, which was quite a while ago, he mentioned that his mom had really connected with the Texas coaches, although she was also supportive of his other two favorites.

“She still bonds with Texas. She got to know all the coaches better up there better. But she likes all the coaches for different reasons. Likes Jackie Shipp at Oklahoma. My grandma does too. That's no secret. They trust him but they trust the coaches at other schools too. But she still has that passion with Texas,” McFarland said. “She talks to coach (Mack) Brown and coach (Mac) McWhorter. When she can, she'll call them if she has any questions and they'll answer them.”

Oklahoma is expected to take in McFarland’s game this week and McFarland said he believes Texas is going to make it to his team’s next home contest. LSU coaches Les Miles and one assistant took in one of his games earlier this year.

There’s been a lot of talk about different prospects, notably Russell Shepard, recruiting McFarland for different schools, but the blue-chip tackle downplayed the significance of his relationships with other recruits. He mentions that he texts with UT commit Alex Okafor and current Longhorn Roy Miller in addition to LSU commits Shepard, Chris Davenport and Dexter Pratt.

“We're all in the same boat, us high school kids. They could change their minds right now if they wanted to so none of them try to pressure me,” said McFarland. “They're straight forward. They say there’s no way in the world they’re going to push me to go somewhere that I don't want to go. They say to pick what’s best for me. They’d love to play with me but I need to handle my business and make the best choice.” (JS)
