Preseason polls are unnecessary.

Some think it's "Who do you think will be the National Champion" other think it's "Who is the best team right now"

The biggest problem is that unless a team that is highly ranked preseason loses two games they won't fall all that much. Perfect example: 2004, USC and OU when undefeated...both preseason ranked very high (Top 5), Auburn unranked preseason, went undefeated, never ranked higher than 3rd because it couldn't leapfrog USC or OU. AU left out of national championship game because of preseason ranking.

The final poll of last year should be the preseason poll and then after week 1 of the season, take another poll. Team that should fall, will. and teams that should improve, will.

A championship isnt like a belt in boxing. in football when you win it, its yours forever. you dont "defend" it, so (even though preseason polls are pointless)ranking the previous season champion number 1 is pointless unless you think they'll finish 1 again......
