Possibility both are starting by Nov. 8th. Who wins that battle? My money is on PJ shutting him down - see Miss/Bama all-star game.

PJ will be redshirted all year.

It would be stupid to waste his eligibility unless there is an injury.

No way P J is redshirted. He will never be here for 5 years, so it would be a waste to redshirt him. In addition to either starting or backing up at corner, he will be a stud on kickoff and punt coverage teams.

Not if he proves too valuable to keep on the bench. The fact of the matter is, we're going to start two unproven corners. If Patrick Johnson shows up in practice and makes it apparent that he gives the team the best chance to win, then I don't see that there's any way he stays off the field.

I personally don't see him redshirting this year. He's got the prototypical size and speed for the corner position, and he was being hailed as the premier cover corner in last year's national recruiting class. Add that to him joining a defensive backfield with very little experience at the corner position.

I honestly think that unless he truly turns some heads in the Preseason, he'll be a red shirt.

that being said, I really think he will turn some heads in the Preseason.

What are the chances of the #1 rated corner in the country not turning heads in the preseason?

Granted Jai Eugene was also the #1 rated corner a couple years ago, but his rating was based on projection... PJ's rating was based on game performance.

So, why are you saying he'll be redshirted?

I say burn the Red shirt if it looks like we can use that kid. Doubtful he stays 5 years anyway, from what I've read about him. I've seen some go as far as say he is the best CB out of High School in more then a couple of years.

Good shot he starts this year. Scouts have described him as the most physically dominent defensive HS player they have ever seen -- and added that they never thought they would be saying that about a DB. CLM isn't that excited about the incumbents at CB.

I just feel like that such a stretch for any guy that hasn't even been to a college practice yet. So few guys even pan out to be NFL prospects ever, it seems kind of silly to make personnel decisions now based on the slim chance that a kid will actually be leaving early for the NFL. I mean, how many super recruits have we signed and how many of them have actually turned out to be early defectors to the NFL?

JaMarcus
Clayton
Hill
Trev
Reed

That's about all I can think of in the last 10 years or so. I guess you could count Booty, but that was more about losing his starting job at LSU than "leaving early" for the NFL. Just seems like an awfully slim chance for which to burn a redshirt.
