I'd say Mission Accomplished.

Yeah, thank God for her, I hadn't seen any news coverage of Tibet until her act of bravery

No A-hole. I'm saying when you agree with the Olympic committeee to participate in a program you don't make an arse of yourself and embarass the organization. If you want to make a political statement do it on your own time, you don't accept the honor and turn on your host. I agreed with the fellow participants who thought she was wrong to politicize the honor they were given.

OMG I'm agreeing with CT...

Yes, it has made a big difference for Tibet, I heard China is evacuating its troops and paying reparations to Tibet based upon her accomplishments.

So if you personally can't eradicate world hunger you shouldn't feed the guy next door?

No, I go out in the street and make an arse of myself to draw attention to world hunger that will feed the guy next door.

Only if you're a moral relativist that believes the ends justify the means.

Freedom of speech has its consequences.
My problem is with people on this board condemning her for exercising her right to free speech. This “shut up and sit down” mentality is very dangerous to your freedom and liberty.

For once, Tx Tiger, this old libertarian agrees with you wholeheartedly.

I don't give a shite about a single aspect of this story, but I came to this thread wondering why the hell people kept responding to something so stupid. Now I see why.

Here's my run-down:

1. Carter did a personal little protest using her own little Tibetan flag. Maybe you think it's cool, maybe you think it's stupid. Whatever. I certainly wouldn't call it classless, and I don't understand why anyone would assume that it wasn't heartfelt, no matter how dumb the logic may or may not have been.

2. It's a cheesy torch run. In no way does this procession through San Francisco even approach what I would consider a "great honor," nor do I feel even the slightest bit of embarrassment for Carter's actions as a fellow American. I actually sort of like the idea that we pissed off the Chinese, and that our authorities could legitimately deny complicity. Haha. It's funny people.

3. I do not think that Carter had her free speech rights unduly restricted.

4. I do not think that the Chinese guards acted inappropriately, unless I hear something indicating that the story isn't just some big exaggeration.

5. I have no idea why anybody would be genuinely upset about Carter's actions, nor why anyone would feel the need to defend China's "honor." There are a lot of posters in this thread who are being ridiculous.
