"We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone."

This statement has no legal standing, does it? Just curious why it would be posted and what would happen if someone refused to leave if asked to based on that statement only. (Assuming the customer did nothing wrong)

i'm sure a minority would have a solid basis for racial discrimination. but for example the manager of a restaurant simply doesn't want his ex to be there, can he throw her out - legally?

It's a private business. It's the same as kicking someone out of your house. The business does have the right to refuse service for any reason it wants. They don't even have to post a sign saying as such. Now can they get sued for it? Maybe, depends on the circumstances.

If you came into my business with not shoes or shirt, you got to go. Nice restaurant and your wearing cut off shorts and a wife beater, you got to go. Come in drunk, see ya. The posibilities are endless and it depends on the business owners particular preference.

I would think that it's OK as long as there isn't a pattern of discrimination that could be proven in court. I know if I owned a business and someone was disagreeable, I would want to kick their arse out, and I've seen it done at a lot of places that I have worked in the past.

In the United States, we used to respect the concept of private property. If you owned a business and didn't want to let a certain person or group of people in then that was your business.

But for the past 30 or 40 years, we've gotten away from that and started legislating how people can use their own private property, i.e. no smoking in restuarants, etc. It's a step towards socialism.

all things being equal - the patron is dressed appropriately and well behaved - the manager simply does not like this person for no applicable - what happens if he tries to throw the person out and the patron refuses?

There is plenty of diversity at the club.

Tried going into a bar (think it was Tiger bar) while wearing a skull cap once, just a plain brown one (very cold outside). They wouldn't let me in. Told me only baseball caps could be worn. I went back to my car and put on a baseball cap and turned it sideways to see if they'd let me in. They did. Still find this odd.
