Is there any reason as to why SEC schools don't have Division I wrestling teams?

I know most schools have wrestling clubs, but I think it would be great for the conference to establish Div. I wrestling teams

I have always wondered this. La., doesn't have much of a wrestling tradition in a good % of the High Schools around the state, I think LSU having a legit program could change all that.

Agreed. And Tennessee is also a very solid wrestling state. Most high school wrestlers from southern states end up in smaller conferences, usually because their school is closer to home.

With the emergence of MMA, College wrestlers now have a legitimate outlet once they are finished with college.

It has to do with that stupid rule that men and women have to have an equal amount of scholarships. It is too difficult to be able to support wrestling an football (men's sports).

The question should be, would anyone in the SEC care if there was men's wrestling?

Would probably draw enough interest to justify having a program.

I would guess it is all because of Title IX.

In order for SEC programs to field competitive, non-club, wrestling teams there would need to be another existing sports team eliminated.

I would have a feeling that if you went through and compared sport for sport the teams fielded by SEC programs and schools that have either a wrestling team (if there are any at the 1A level of NCAA) or a hockey team (like Boston College, North Dakota, etc.), you would find that those programs didn't compete in a discipline that the SEC does (possibly tennis or golf).

Back in the late 70's there use to be SEC wrestling. I thick 7 of the 10 schools had a team. But with Title IX the schools dropped them to decrease the number of male scholarships. In one month most of the programs cut wrestling and by the next year I think they all had.

Former LSU and WWE wrestler, the late John Tenta (Earthquake), agrees.
