The day I can go to Windows Features and uninstall WMP (which also takes out WMC, which I currently use as my DVR) may finally be at hand.

So can you couple this with an Amazon Fire TV sideloaded with KODI and not need a dedicated computer if you have a NAS box?

It appears the software will be subscription based...? That's a big deal breaker for me if I'm not misreading that.

It appears to be $30 a year.

$30/year shouldn't hurt too bad. This does include guide data. In a way, Microsoft did a real disservice to the HTPC community by making WMC mostly good enough with no ongoing fees and then essentially abandoning development in 2009 without fixing several well-known bugs and shortcomings, not to mention failing to release a non-Xbox extender and never adding mobile support. Add in the time-consuming, expensive CableLABs certification that Microsoft hasn't shared with anyone, the bar for doing something like this is pretty high to say the least.

I do suppose that $30/yr for "life after media center" is a fairly small price to pay. It will be hard to walk away from WMC for it though. I don't think I'll early adopt at this point. I'll do a bit more reading, but i guess if they integrate guide data to multiple different frontends (not sure if they're saying they will or not), it's fairly inviting.
How is guide data not crowd-sourced at this point? Am I missing something there? That has always confused me, especially with the handful of free options getting slimmer as of late.

Looks like you're right about that, but the supported NAS boxes will be fairly limited at first.
ETA: they claim "Linux" will work. Would be very interested to see whether FreeNAS is a supported Linux distro to them.

It's a lot cheaper than Tivo and looks to be a lot more flexible than WMC for whole home DVR and mobile use.

I agree. As much as I complain about WMC, it really does get a lot right, especially with the help of programs like MyChannelLogos and GuideTool. If I can't hide and reorder my channels as I see fit, get rid of the stupid, space-wasting "HD" designators in the channel logos, and suppress the display of channel numbers to show just the logo, I'll be disappointed. Trivial as it sounds, this stuff does make a big difference.

It varies with region and provider and lineup, it has to be kept up to date, and it has to be reliable. That sounds like a full-time job to me. Even WMC's relationship with Zap2It is imperfect. It's not uncommon for there to be guide errors, and WMC can lag schedule changes that appear on Zap2It's web site. No idea how much it costs Microsoft. My understanding is that WMC will NOT be in Windows 10.

They're almost at $40 K after two days, with the 30 day target being $100 K.

It's over. The pledges totalled $370,280, which means they met their Kodi and Plex stretch goals (but no protected content for them at launch). First release candidates said to be September-ish.
