If he is interested in that, tell him to get his instrumentation cert at a tech school and he will never be out of work. With all of the expansion in LA there will be a huge shortage of them along with welders.

gotta say.......i'm pretty excited with his decision. yep....we always wanted our kids to go to college but, for some reason, i'm really thrilled that he wants to get a trade in this field instead.
I went into the electrical field straight out of high school and did it for 8 years until I was in a car accident that made manual labor tough so i decided to go to school and get an accounting degree.
the first 2-3 years are going to be tough, a lot of grunt work. tell him to keep his head up and learn all he can because it's a profession with A LOT of upside for people who want to do well, he could be running job sites in four years. there are also a lot of people who just want a check and never progress above $10 an hour. It's all what he makes it.
And just a heads up, buy him a set of used tools if he doesn't have any. You don't want to be the guy who shows up the first day with a set of shiny new tools

See if you can get him into automation as well.

Are you shocked?
Is he well grounded?

I wish I shared his fondness of physical labor.

Interested in this as I have a computer background. I noticed Cisco has an industrial certification too that I would be interested in.
Thanks.

Good for him. But there's nothing wrong with getting a degree. I see too many people putting down college degrees which is a pretty proven way of succeeding as well provided you can hack it. They're just different paths and at the end of the day, it comes down to the individual.

I agree that a degree's important. however, if he told me that he was going to college to get a degree in general studies, I think i'd prefer that he went to trade school and became an electrician.
times have changed I suppose.

How long is the apprenticeship? Does he need to do a trade school down there first?

he goes "hands on" for a year and then classroom for a "degree" for another year. something like that.

Gotcha. We work with union electricians up here a lot in the data centers we're in. The more experienced guys all are right about $100k a year but they are master electricians. The entry level here seems to be in the $20 an hour range but again that's union.

that sounds wonderful. I never really worried about him being a success. I know that I am biased but, my man works really hard all the time. never complains about the work and loves money. he's been shaving since 5th grade.

Electricians do it without shorts.

ITT Tech is always a safe gamble.

Excellent choice. I have a cousin who is a second generation electrician. He and his dad both specialized in electrical maintenance for heavy industry like steel mills. Dangerous work if you didn't know what you were doing but very, very lucrative. They'd sometimes get calls in the middle of the night for emergencies, much like doctors.
