How do you all go about finding local Baton Rouge area garage sales? I see the Advocate has a page dedicated to a mapped region with labled garage sales.

Also, what do you bring? Do you negotiate? What's the usual amount of cash you bring?

I bring several hundred dollars cash at least and yes negoatiate within reason. Often times I'll say "I'll pay what you're asking for that trunk but can you throw in those pillows?"

Have to read the people though, some garage sale people can be assholes.

As far as finding them in BR I can't help, sorry. I live in nashville and even here I don't go often because you have to go so damn early on weekends to get good stuff.

We have a facebook page for local garage sale listings though, maybe try that.

Poor lol...

Perhaps the OP, like others who will reply genuinely, is a man with money and the skills and acumen to to turn finds into reclaimed treasure. Shop skills kids today don't have. The thrill of taking shite furniture and transforming it into a "where did you get that?" home piece. Not to mention the art of paying 10 bucks for it.

It's satisfying. Manly. Relaxing.

Eat a honey bun and post more. The world needs lazy folk, too.

I'm just not afraid of shelling out $15 instead of trying to jew a seller down to $10. Sorry for being a baller.

Hit them up the afternoon before the day they are having it. You have a chance of beating the pros to the good stuff then.

Check out Graigs List, also look in the little Money Saver/Penny Saver type circulation's.

When I go(not with the wife), I usually carry a few $20s. If I find a good score which is several hundreds (which is rare), I will usually put a deposit on it and run to the ATM to getthe cash to purchase the item.

If I see something that I want but its seems over-priced, I will nicely ask soemthing like 'is that the best price?'

Sometimes they will not go down, sometimes they will.

The of the main reason people have garage sales is to get rid of stuff they no longer want or need.

Garage sales are interesting experiences, at least here in BR.

My wife and I inherited furniture and odds and ends from relatives over the years so we've held a handful of sales over the years - we lived in the garden district and then later mid-city.

The thing we noticed was that within the first hour of the sale, we saw the same 20 or so people come and hit the better items hard. They all wanted to lowball within the first hour and eventually would pay asking price when we stood firm.

Basically, know your neighborhoods and what places might have diamonds in the rough.

Also, gotta be in that early rush because the pros can spot anything of remote value and snatch it up.
