obviously will be calling my carrier to see what the options are, but am wanting to hear experiences/opinions of others who have gone to Europe or anywhere overseas and how they handled phone issues.

obviously gps would be something that i may need to find my way around paris/barc/rome.

I'm interested in what you learn. Going to Italy for 2 weeks at the end of the summer and need to stay in touch with work.

If you have ATT you can add the passport plan where you purchase a certain amount of minutes and data while overseas. It is good for 30 days.

Call your provider. they offer many different price plans for data, text and phone. Data is what you will use most to look things up, maps, etc. All are expensive as shite.

I bought a mid grade plan and had to re-buy it three days into the trip. On the fifth day, I was prompted to re-buy again, so I went on airplane mode and only connected at internet coffee shops/hotels.

Might have something to discuss with you in the upcoming months that I think you alluded to some time back. Don't mean to be vague but I think it's a discussion worth having at some point. You have an email address you can get to me?

If you have an unlocked GSM phone you can simply swap the SIM card for a local one.

TMob free texting and data. 20 cents per minute for calls to the U.S. Or just buy a sim at the airport, it's all pretty easy as long as you have a gsm phone.

Turn off roaming, use wifi when possible. Some carriers allow you to purchase intl plans but the charges are rather pricy. Text when possible

FYI - was made aware of this feature on Sprint yesterday, and added it to my plan.

Free unlimited international data and text LINK

only available in 15 countries, however:

Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Spain, Chile, Costa Rica, Panama, Germany, Japan, Russia, South Korea and United Kingdom.

After calling into Sprint, the data will actually only be 2G data ( , i know), but it will be unlimited. So I will be able to use free text/data in Spain, but not France/Italy.

You would be better off getting a pre paid sim card and loading like 50 euro on it. Then just throw that in your phone. Lots of them offer 4G and carries like Vodafone work in every country.

I have an S4 I'm planning on using overseas this December. From what I've read its already "capable."

You'll need to buy a sim on arrival and change the network settings if your carrier is a CDMA carrier (Verizon) to GSM.

The setting can be changed by going to Settings > More Networks > Mobile Networks > Network Mode

Usually, the vendor that sells the sim can do this for you and get you set up on their network APN.

I didn't even have to do that with my iPhone5s from verizon bc they have sims now unlike the iPhone 4.

Ya, it may not be required, but its good to know where it is if it is so you can show the vendor if necessary.

My last two overseas trips I bought a phone local once and the other time went without so I haven't been through the process using my phone yet.
