that's because it's an incredibly difficult position to fill. with so many teams playing 3-4 today, it's even more so. NT is a premium spot for a 3-4 team, so to find the right guy you need to take a chance on him early.

That's the point. Should the Saints really take a flyer like that?

People keep comparing Shelton to Ngata, but Ngata played poorly when he primarily played nose in '13 and I would not take ngata to play nose.

Ngata is still one of the best NTs of all time. Also, NT play has a lot to do with what your linebackers can do. Right now the Saints don't have the LBs to help a NT to excel.

Poor wording on my part, if I drafted Ngata it would not be to play nose. Ngata seems to play better at DT/DE moving around where he played last year while Brandon Williams manned the nose, but you are correct in that Ngata is a very good NT.

Regardless of Ngata's play at NT vs DT or DE, I just do not get the Ngata to Shelton comparisons other than they are both big Polynesian guys and Shelton tries to "emulate" Ngata. Ngata is much better put together (taller, longer, trimmer) and more athletic. Ngata can play all over the line while Shelton can play nose.

It seems like that is starting to resonate some in the mock draft community and may or may not already be the prevailing thought with people who count. McShay released rankings today that has Shelton No. 14 overall in the class but cautions that he isn't scheme versatile. Mayock also ranks him below Brown (and Armstead for that matter).

I'm almost certain Ngata is a DE, not NT. He's their Jordan/Hicks

I get what you're saying though, and there are some good points you've made in there. Ngata could man the NT position, and he is versatile. If Shelton really is limited, then he may not be the best choice at 13. He would be a good candidate to trade up from 31 to the 20 range if he is still there however.

He's a 340 lb NT/DE who absolutely dominated our interior. A guy like that doesn't always show up in the stat sheet either.

When you're that good, you get put on the field in a variety of ways though

Sign me up for him playing poorly then. 28 stops from the NT position...

haha. i saw your original post with just "NT" on it, and I was about to say you were right. I think they used him at both positions during his career, which says a lot about his ability. he has been predominately a NT though.

No doubt. He's very athletic for his size, so he has the ability to anywhere on a 3-4 line depending on the situation.

The problem with playing NT is that your main job is to eat up the blockers and let your linebackers do the work against the run. Always hard to rush the passer from the NT position

We just need a guy who's not gonna let Matt Ryan step up over and over again when Junior and Cam are crashing down

And I think you were more correct than I was about his position. They've had a history of running a hybrid scheme like us.
