Why is it that people who often have odd or uncommon names/spellings/variations never bother to clarify how to spell the name unless you specifically ask?

I was on the phone yesterday with a "Jenny". I was looking through our company records in attempt to locate her account, but I was unable to do so. I then asked her if the account was perhaps created under another name. She says, "It might be under 'Jenavene'".

I ask her to spell the name and she beings 'G-e-n...'. I reply, "So, Jenny is spelled with a 'G'?" (Ginny)

She says, "Yes that's right."

Why the hell would you not clarify something like that beforehand? I have never encountered a single person in my entire life with that spelling variation.

It's like these people get off on being poked and prodded and asked the same damn questions every time someone needs to fill out paperwork or perform a search.

That's why my children will only be named after Plantagenet (and their descendants - Lancaster, York, Tudor, Stuart, Hanover, and Windsor) kings and queens of England. So Henry, George, Edward, John, Elizabeth, Anne, Victoria, Richard, Charles, and William are the primary options to choose from. There will be no confusion on the spelling.

It's not as bad as people who insist on irregular pronunciations, like "Tarruh" (Tara), or "Kyyeersten" (Kirsten). frick off with your stupid shite. You aren't exceptional. If you want your name pronounced differently, fricking spell it that way, you twat.

They just want their kids' names to be unique.

Pronounced "You-nee-kwa".

Someone informed me that it's a British thing. Ginny is often a shortened version of Guinevere, whereas Jenny is a shortened version of Jennifer.

So many of us already have to spell our last names for others, why add to the confusion with random variations on the most common spelling of first names??
