Just wanted to share this with the board. I've been on a nerd fiction kick the last few months while playing with Kindle Lending Library on Prime. I just finished a Storm of Swords and needed a break. Damn those books are tough to get through.

I finally got around to reading Redshirts, seen it recommended here a ton of times. Loved it.

Picked up Off To Be The Wizard on a "Readers also bought" feature after finishing Redshirts. Basically, its about a guy that discovers a file that he can edit and give himself special powers that goes back to 1400's England to become a wizard. Theres a trilogy of books, all three are light reading and available on the lending library for free.

Just started Teleport This last night. Its about two Astrophysicists that discover a signal and build a teleporter to make contact with aliens, only to find out they're humans. Think Contact without brooding Jodie Foster and add a bunch of Star Wars/Pop Culture references. $4.99 for the trilogy and also available for free on the lending library.

Any other suggestions from the board?

The Mind Dimension series by Dima Zales.

It's about a guy who can stop time and read people's minds. Quick easy reads and the third book comes out next week. Only a couple bucks a piece on Kindle.

If you enjoy horror and nerd fiction, check out Necroscope by Brian Lumley. It's about a man that can communicate with the dead, a secret branch of British Intelligence that employs people with ESP, and a vampire that is part of the KGB, set during the cold war.

Dresden Files

Best urban fantasy series ever. Its hilarious, heartbreaking, and full of action and pop culture references. Plus there's like 16 of them out right now so theres plenty of material to go through.

I've been resisting this series for some reason. It seems set in modern times, which is the biggest deterrent. Is the first book indicative of the rest of the series so that I can get a good impression of whether I will enjoy the full series or not?

If you like Dresden and are killing time until the next book comes out, check out The Iron Druid series by Kevin Hearne

I did not enjoy these books, which is strange because I like most everything.

Too cheesy? campy? Can't put my finger on it.
Did not like Harry.

If you like military scifi, I recommend the Theirs Not To Reason Why series by Jean Johnson. Main character can see the future and sees the destruction of the galaxy. Joins the military to put together a series of events that will save the galaxy three hundred years in the future. I've read the first book and the second one is on my bedside table.

I also just started reading The Way of Shadows. About 200 pages in and I'm liking it.

If you enjoy darker, more medieval fantasy, check out The Night Angel Trilogy by Brent Weeks. I'm currently on my second re-read.

Thanks all! Glad this thread is getting some traction. I just felt like reading something different. Seriously, if you are a Prime user, and like to read, invest the $100 in a Kindle Paperwhite. The lending library alone will get you a free book each month and will damn near pay for the device itself in one year.

my reader of choice

Also, for summer trips in the car I do recommend the library's free overdrive system. It sucks to navigate on your phone so I usually use my laptop to search and then the mobile app to download. Free audiobooks for 21 days a piece. limit of 10 at a time.
Is also wonderful for grocery shopping or working out. My library system is up to 10,000 books now.

Yea, I've been on a reading kick lately. A central thread for fiction would be great.

Only book I haven't been able to finish was Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie.

Has anyone else read it? I got to about 100 pages from completion and just put it down.

If you like fantasy, I'd recommend the Malazan series but if you found Storm of Swords hard to get through, you may not want to start Malazan

I have read almost all popular fantasy out there, including the Song of Ice and FIre stuff twice.

I've tried reading the Malazan stuff and put it down twice. I don't know what it is, but it just isn't my cup of tea.

I'll give HIGH praise to Ready Player One. It's now one of my all time favorite stand alone books.

Other recommendations:
Almost anything by Brandon Sanderson. Especially his Stormlight Archive series. It is his opus and will eclipse GRR Martin's stuff.

If you like The Dark Tower by Stephen King, check out The Whirlwind in the Thorn Tree by SA Hunt. It's a lot like The Dark Tower without being a total ripoff. I'm almost halfway through the third book and I can't put it down.

Blood Song by Anthony Ryan and it's sequel Tower Lord are awesome books as well.
