Anyone ever try fishing for them. I threw the cast net yesterday evening in the surf and caught a few 10-12 inch pompano. Never tried fishing them but I figured it my be worth a shot.

Fwiw, I also caught 2 dozen medium to large female crabs.

Yeah, we usually catch them on shad rigs.

shite, I need to get down there. I've only caught one over there on a live shrimp while surf fishing, but my wife ate it while I was out of town. Apparently very good eating fish and no size or creel limit.

Best time of the year is late September. Small hook with bait shrimp, but one has to fight all the hardtails too.

When I was a kid, my dad used to go fish for them at the Sandy Point rigs. I think in the fall months.

Very good spot and also East bay rigs. Yes, also out the surf in GI. They like to feed close to the rocks there and the water clears up real good in late September.

Just curious. What's considered a good amount? A dozen or so? I wish I would have kept the few I caught.

ie. I've never seen anyone post a stringer of pompano.

We catch the hell out of them wade fishing on the sand bars. Mostly on crab and shrimp flies. I have some pictures somewhere of a few pompano stringers. I've seen a couple of 5 pounders caught on the fly. The bigger fish are always released.

Excellent table fare. Best when cooked whole. Keep a few next time but just because there is no limit doesn't mean fill your ice chest with them.

Barf you talking about the sandbars in GI. I've never fished for them. Is it an early morning/late afternoon bite?

Amen to that.

They are an oily fish that usually don't keep as well as others species in the freezer.
Keep a few and grill or broil them up.

Yep, just like tuna. I hate seeing people keep a ton of tuna only to be thrown in the trash a year later, after they take it out of their freezer. 1 tuna per person is plenty.
