My friend has mentioned she wants to recommend me for a position at her tech company based there. I don't know a damn thing about the place other than BYU, it's known for being prude, and there are lots of mormons.

I'm sure the people are nice. I saw Provo is supposed to be a great place to raise a family. I'm a single 25 YO protestant male who consumes alochol and believes in sex before marriage.

Salt Lake City is nice. Can't advise living anywhere else in Utah.

from what my internet friends from utah have told me

1. TONS of hot chicks with blonde hair and blue eyes

2. you can't do much with #1 b/c many are legit devout

3. your cultural options will be limited

4. you can't have sex toys shipped into the state

Utah is cool, I've lived in SLC and Park City, but Provo is like the Mormon mecca. Can't say that's a good or bad thing, but they're nice people regardless

I think there is still a gang in slc that is mainly somoans.

Utah is probably a beautiful place but if you aren't an ultra conservative I don't think you would want to live there.

It was good enough for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

Went there once for work.. It is very clean, there are tons of Mormons (who are very nice) and not many bars. There are BYU students who are married with multiple kids.

It's close to SLC, skiing, and national parks.

You're overlooking the fact that as a non-Mormon beer-drinker, you can play the bad boy role.

Just moved from New Orleans to SLC in November.

The area is awesome if you like the outdoors. We've been hiking since February almost every weekend we're home. Infrastructure is top notch so traffic isn't all that bad. Culture in SLC is cool, Provo, that's a little different. Winter was not bad, there's skiing and pretty much anything you want to do outside. Food is not AS BAD as people make it out to be, but certainly not great either.

But it's a pretty cool way of life here if you're in tech (I am). Lots of similarly minded folks, a good enough social scene (we play soccer every week. Indoors, Co-Ed. Never ending and always enough people).

We've loved it enough to call it a place we might finally settle down in. However, Provo is different. If I were looking at a job in Provo, I'd probably look to live further north. Sandy/Draper would equate to a 40 minute drive and is pretty much 20 mins from downtown. American Fork is a little further south and splits the difference.

Personally, for my career and life, SLC/Utah is one of the best moves I've made. The lack of a real body of water is probably the only drawback, although the fly fishing scene here is something I haven't gotten into yet (but plan to).

Edit: And the tech scene in terms of career is awesome here and very tight knit. I have a good feeling that even if I want to leave my current job, I'd have lots of options nearby. They have a small incubator supporting lots of internal growth. The Silicon Slopes term is unknown now, but will gain steam over the next few years.

I'm not a tech person. The extent of my technical background is I've worked at an app startup doing a business strategy internship (which was a lot of fun despite the fact the founder was competely clueless as to what he was doing)

Based on your description, DC >> SLC. We even have the indoor soccer and hiking, plus great food and a nearby body of water.
