Could Landon Collins project as a WS LB in a 3-4 defense?

Seems to have the size and physical toughness, plus the speed to cover RB's and pursue from the backside. Sort of a Derrick Brooks type?

He'd have to put on 20 - 25 lbs, but I don't see it.

Ahhh, reminds me of the Chad Jones to LBer threads on the rant.

The other team would just run the ball right at him. He would get eaten alive against the run.

Why not just draft a weakside linebacker?

The NFL guys aren't even sure what to do with him.

Spoke w/ 5 different NFL execs today on Shaq Thompson's ideal position in NFL. 3 say safety, 1 says LB, 1 says RB. Can he be K. Chancellor?

So I don't know about Collins/Shaq at LB. Shaq would probably be great in a 4-2 front on 3rd and 5+ yards, but it will be tricky to figure out what to do with him on most downs.

I think Collins is cemented at safety, but there are LBs who are similar to Collins' size

I have to agree that the size thing is overblown. If you are at least around the 230 mark you can play LB(other things given). Plenty of LBs throughout the years have played and played effectively at that size.

Same things were being said about Shazier being to small businesses he's looking good so far. I think Thompson can be effective. Kid can ball almost regardless of where you put him.

On Collins, has he ever played LB? It's not quite the same as safety and there would be a bit learning curve. That's not what you want in a first round pick.

Personally I think Collins is an overrated Safety. He misses assignments and has gotten burned by WRs often (but that's partly the CBs fault). He is decent playing the run and tackles well but to draft him in the first and then to convert him to LB would be a mistake.

He'd fit better as an OLB in a 4-3 defense. In the 3-4, an OLB will be a little bigger whereas in the 4-3 the DL occupies more blockers and can allow the OLBs to roam more freely.

I am really looking forward to seeing who blows a first round pick on him.

Big attitude
Big Mouth

Has potential to be a bust as it relates to being drafted in the first round. IMO

Would only cement the perception in some quarters that the saints are anti-LSU and anti-Louisiana.

Agreed. I'm not critical of him because I'm an LSU fan, but he never set the world on fire in college to me. If he goes in the first, I think that signals a weak class of safeties in the draft.

Spending a first on a safety to play linebacker is something the Saints would definitely do.
