I went to a relatives tonight and saw a couple of black bellied whistling ducks. I have heard of one friend who has killed a couple only to find out they were hunting on a doe day at a WMA so the ducks were taken. How common are these guys?

Common in the summer, they head south before the season gets here...

pretty common along the coast...I think they migrate south during the winter and spend the summers here, so we don't see them all that much during the season...they tear up some rice fields during the summer, though....

You'll also see the Fulvous (sp?), which is the other species of whistler in North America.

I actually thought there were three species of tree ducks here...fulvous, whistiling, and black bellied...

Theres many flocks that have began flying over every night now. Go outside about 30 minutes before complete darkness and you can hear them

See them on Verret and in the Spillway around this time till late summer pretty frequently.

Have seen them during teal season sometimes too. They are pretty unmistakeable compared to BWT.

Pretty common nowadays. See flocks of 10's & 20's all around the outskirts of Thibodaux year round.

Biggest flock I've ever seen...about 200 @ Audubon Zoo.

Seem to be spreading. I used to never see them up here. Now, see them every year.

Who was the jackass state representative that illegally killed a bunch, then came up with the worst excuse ever?

There are a shite load of them in my neighborhood right now. I have a flock of about 20 that comes to my neighbors bird feeder every afternoon.
